there is very little i know about theodore roosevelt,
beyond his square teeth,
the myth we learn young of his nickname,
and his work with the woods.

despite this ignorance regarding the
as i now know 26th president of
the states, despite the fact that
the world i view is greens and blues
not sepia brown faded tea as the photo
pronounces, despite the fact that
i was beside not john muir nor some
nameless cowboy, not even in america,
no where near the giant redwoods i've
never seen anyway,

i felt old and grand and rough around
the edges, likely to be purchased in
a shoebox full of likewise images, for
the pencil marked price of a dime,
displaying a distant relative of his,
who i feel connected enough to say,
fdr, a distant relative of mine.
