Podcast Reclist!

Jan 23, 2019 00:04

Told you I would post more! I wanted to share my podcast reclist and I didn't want to postpone putting it up, because one of these has an expiration date and I hope to get more people to listen to it before it's taken offline.

When my co-workers in the office get too loud (or talk too much nonsense, oh my lord) I put on my headphones so I can focus on my job. I often listen to music, but last year I discovered a type of podcast I can listen to while I work. (I tried podfics before, but I just can't do anything else when listening to a story). Below are my recommendations of various types of postcasts: series of interviews, booktalks and a radio play (first episode available until January 30th!)

Richard Herring Leicester Square Theatre Podcast [RHLSP]
These podcast are also available on video on YouTube and are filmed in front of a live audience (Me! I was in the audience!). I've known Richard Herring since the nineties when he did a comedy Sundaymorning show on the BBC with Lee Herring. I love his humor and how chill he is with his guests. Most of them come from the UK comedy scene, (big stars like Stephen Fry or Dawn French for instance, but I also loved possibly lesser known Rose Matafeo (from New Zealand) en Nish Kumar, whom I both saw when I visited the recording of the podcast during my last visit to London;) but there was also a hilarious interview with author Jonathan Ames. There are over a hundred interviews on archive; they last about 75 minutes each. Be warned: they can be a bit raunchy, also thanks to Richard's collection of Emergency Questions, that he created to help him out when conversations falter.

PotterLess Podcast
Potterless is a podcast from 25 year old American Mike who's reading the Harry Potter books for the first time. Latest episode is about Chapter 7 of Deathly Hallows, I've listened up to Chapter 19 of The Half-Blood Prince, so I still have a couple to go to catch up! Mike started out doing a couple of chapters per episode, but as the books get bigger, the amount of chapters gets smaller:) In every episode he talks about what he's read with one of his many friends who all have read the books when they were kids and who sometimes have to try real hard to not spoil anything. In episode zero Mike will tell you what he does know about the books and films before he started this podcast, but it's really not a lot.
I love listening to someone discovering the magic of the books and he has some very cool friends that have great input that made me rethink some parts of the books as well.
The moments that make me cringe are mostly USA versus UK misunderstandings (sidenote: I did not know there was another series of audio books NOT read by Stephen Fry but instead by an English guy who's apparently easier on the ear for Americans...) I also get cranky about the weird issues these young ones have towards certain words they find problematic. For instance, Mike thinks J.K. shouldn't use the word "groped" because it's a bad word. IT'S A PERFECTLY FINE WORD, MIKE, CHECK THE CONTEXT, DUDE.
Other than that, definitely worth a try, I promise. (Also because I would love to have someone to talk to about this podcast or Harry Potter;) - No offence meant towards any Americans on my flist *grins* Episodes are 50-75 minutes long.

Witch, Please
Talks between two lady scholars who reread the Harry Potter books and discuss them from a particular point of view, for instance feminism or historic context. They also rewatch the films and talk about the differences between the two media. I love that these are women who loved reading the books and have fond memories of them, but are also not afraid to address the parts that maybe didn't stand the test of time. It's a very pleasant duo to listen to and it did give me some new insights. These podcasts have different lengths; the series is finished, although they are working on new episodes).

Stone Clearing with Richard Herring
Ahw, yes another Richard Herring beauty; a recently started podcast where he talks about Stone Clearing. As one listener put it: "Whilst listening to @Herring1967’s stone clearing podcast I can’t decide if I’m listening to his slow mental decline or his beautiful genius. Or both. [ x] Episodes last from 30 - 40 minutes and start with Richard leaving his house to walk the dog (or so he tells his family. He's really on a mission to clear a nearby farmer's field of stones, but don't tell anyone, it's a secret!)

Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum
Interviews by Michael Rosenbaum with his actor friends. I mostly know Michael from CW fanfic, hehehe, nah, that's not true, I really knew him from Zoe, Duncan, Jack & Jane, I never watched Smallville beyond the pilot. I was most surprised that he isn't this happy-go-lucky character that he presented in public and I really had to get used to his gloomy personality in this podcast. The main goal of these interviews seems to be his need to find out how to be as happy as his guests. I often find myself wanting to shake him to snap out of it, and am always relieved that his guests have a more effective method to cheer him up. I loved the interview he did with Seth Green (what a lovely guy) and the one with Kristen Bell was also a joy to listen to. There are currently 40 episodes available and they vary between 75-90 minutes.

Last but not least, a recently discovered gem: a radioplay for BBC radio, written by - there he is again- Richard Herring. It's a sitcom with emotional moments about an extended family. Currently there are two seasons with 4 episodes of about 30 minutes each. The final episode of S2 will be on BBC Radio 4 this Friday. You can listen to the first season on Soundcloud: Relativity S1 and the second season is available on the BBC website: Relativity S2 (NOTE: there is an expiration date! The first episode is only available on the BBC website until January 31!)

Do you listen to podcasts? Have any recommendations? Fangirling about Harry Potter, Michael Rosenbaum or Richard Herring is also welcome :-)

J.
