Reversebang 2017 The First

Nov 06, 2017 17:10

For my Early_Bird submission to this year's spn_reversebang I decided to focus on someone else than the men in this glorious SPN/RPF fandom for a chance. I've always had a supersecret crush on Samantha Smith and I was inspired by a ninja-selfie she posted on her Instagram [x]. It put an idea in my head that I didn't think would work in RPF, so that's how I ended up with the team of Mary Winchester, Jody Mills and Donna Hanscum in the style of Charlie's Angels. (The original 70s tv-series version;)
Based on this prompt, my author wrote an origin story that starts in the Supernatural and Men of Letters universe we know and then takes a different turn! I proudly present:

Title: Letters' Angels
Author: jennytork
Artist: beelikej
Medium: Papercutting & a bit of painting
Characters: Mary, Jody, Donna, Henry, John, Bobby | Genre: SPN AU
Story Rating: PG | Wordcount: 4037
ART Rating: G, and contains no spoilers for story!

Summary: "Once upon a time, there were three young ladies who just wanted to help people. Two became deputies, one grew up to be a Huntress. Now they all work for me. Me? My name's Henry. I'm a Man of Letters. And they are our Avenging Angels. Here's the story of how we came to be."

I also made an alternative banner with the silhouettes of the cut-outs:)

Plus a banner with a different set-up

On the day I was already coding my artpost, the sun started shining and I just had to do another photoshoot. Here you can see the difference between my first best photo and the one from the reshoot which is the definite banner up above.

Spot the difference! Worth the extra work, right?

I made set ups for these, but they were not needed for the story:)

Character cards

Playing behind the scenes

Fooling around with the cut-outs.

Playing with the sunlight:)

THE MAKING OF

Pencil outline and quick papercut-out.

Playing with cut-out figures:)

I cut the anti-possession logo in three colours paper and then experimented with the cut pieces.

I KNOW IT'S UPSIDE DOWN, OKAY. :-p

In the end I decided on using yellow cut-out with a read piece of paper behind it. I added some action green and...

...tadaah! This is what my promptpiece looked like; the faces and plaid were added digitally. I also adjusted the colour of their boots and hands.

---

After my prompt was claimed and jennytork started writing, sending me bits of the story, I started from the sketch fase again to create a more detailed paperversion:

The logo of the Men of Letters was to be the new background.

I made some digital edits to get the title to look like I wanted and then made a cut-out version in three colours so I'd have options when putting the design together later.

Playing with photography and debating a flowery background (with a patter from my FLOW paperbook)

Left overs or... part of the final set up? Hmmm, maybe I should do something with these silhouette shapes:)

Fresh pencil outlines for new cut-outs in different sections. Close up of paperhand for size.

Cutting the skin parts and trying different colour combinations for the clothes.

Nearly there! Testing letter options. I'm gonna need a bigger background.

I didn't have any A3 yellow paper but then remembered I had a glorious golden yellow paint left from my previous ReverseBang adventure with papier-mâché J3, so I painted a piece of cardboard:) I added a pattern with a piece of tissue to get a slightly aged look.

I then cut-out the Men of Letters logo (in the middle of the paper this time;)

I always love fiddling with the cut-outs.

Finishing touches (I push the knife too hard, hence the covered-up finger) and putting the elements together.

Adding the action green and cutting out printed faces. Mary gets a paperbeanie:)

Getting last-minute doubts about the green, so I experimented with purple and red borders. I also tried handlettering our names and ended up doing a last minute fix with paint to cover my sloppy writing. Panic!

But then the sun came out and I could make some very cool photos and shadowfigures, so all was well.

The end.

Credits & Thanks
Fonts: Finlek (names: added digitally) & Asimov (title: edited and cut out of paper)
References: For the initial set up I copied poses from the modern day Charlie's Angels films. The silhouette set ups where inspired by the original tv-series' designs:) Photos of the Supernatural women were taken from the actresses social media accounts; [Kim Rhodes], [Brianna Buckmaster] and [Samantha Smith].

Thank you, jennytork for claiming my artwork and turning it into a story!
Also thanks to my fellow mods at the spn_reversebang for letting me play behind the scenes in my favorite fandom challenge.

Comments, questions and concrit are all welcome; I just love knowing you stopped by to take a look:)
