Thoughts on Queueing

Oct 01, 2006 08:31

The Gizlet left some stuff with us on Friday, so I parcelled everything up and went yesterday to the post office to post it. When I got there just after 1130 the queue was out the door across the street and virtually every person in front of me was waiting to pay their road tax. Now first up, people PLEASE!! Get a life! Pay online, or do it before the month runs out. Don't stand behind me yakking and being incredibly rude about what a nightmare this is. I don't want to hear your uneducated, tabloid reading informed "opinion" on how this town is going to the dogs, what a crappy place to live it is or how terrible it is that there's only one person serving all these people. For a start, there were four, which is the most I've ever seen in our main post office.  I stood for 25 minutes and was so glad to be able to leave. I smiled at my counter assistant, she processed my packet and away I went.

Fast forward to this morning: Having finished the prep for my service, I rose early and walked into town to buy a ticket to see Alan Bennett from our superior local bookseller, Topping and Company. The last 100 tickets went on sale this morning at 8, and I was right there. When I got there there was a queue of about 8 people or so, standing nicely, a little light chat, looking at the books in the window, enjoying the autumn sunshine. Mr Topping opened the doors, there was coffee brewing, music playing and a warm and friendly atmosphere.

Really, need I say more? Am I being hideously middle class?!
