mouse guard/reducer

hi - no honey this year (it's my first year) but both hives seem to be doing quite well :)

I do have a question about entrance reducers, especially with the cold weather approaching (I'm in northwest CT, USA)

I've read that metal mouse guards/reducers are better because mice can't chew through them. I put one in, but noticed that there was a buildup of dead drones right inside the hive. I guess they cant be pushed out.

Has anyone had problems with the wooden reducer and mice chewing through? My hives are 18-24 inches off the ground on a stand.

thx!
