The Adventure of the Lovers' Quarrel

You all remember that I love Clive Merrison and Michael Williams' takes on Holmes and Watson, right? Well, if you haven't realised why yet, allow me to show you ( Read more... )

You know, the notion that Holmes felt anything other than a sort of grudging respect for Irene is silly. Watson says right out that he didn't love her, at all. So if you're busy believing that Watson was telling the whole truth, then you have to believe that he was at least being honest about Irene. The "reputable" Sherlockians cannot have it both ways. /rant.

I LOVE THEM TOO. Every interpretation of Holmes in the last 30 years has been trying to out-gay the other ones, immho.

Word. (You know how you hate warnings for slash? Well, I hate "reputable" fans. That's poppycock -- there's no such thing. There are casual fans and hardcore fans, but not reputable fans. Just stodgy old geezers who are homophobic while praising the walking campness that is Jeremy Brett. Inconsistency, thy name is Holmsians.)

THEY ARE SO ADORABLE AND STUPID. And they are so in love. Have you heard THOR yet? Because the ending is one of the least subtle "Meet me in the bedroom, darling ;)" I've heard in a long, long time. Honestly, it's almost up there with "Is that a gun in your pocket?" imho.

For a terrifying second I thought you were harshing on Mr. Brett and I was preparing to get into my battle armor and ride out to defend the poor bastard. However, having re-read and hopefully correctly interpreted what you're saying, (note: you are not to blame for lack of clarity, I am to blame for lack of coherence.) I shall have to call "Word" right back at you. Any suggestion that the "reputable" lot have more valid ideas than the rest of us is likely to incur my wrath - getting your narrow-mindedness published does not make you right, it merely makes you a loud-mouthed git.

I have not heard THOR yet but if it has even more obvious subtext than usual I will make it my reward for the next 500 words I get written of this damnable essay.

I would never dare to insult Mr Brett in front of you again, and that was certainly not my intention. Major kudos to him and his portrayal of Holmes, but he's still as camp as a scout patrol. I mean, he's even got the hip-cocking and limp-wristing down to an art, good god. Like my non-slash-fan of a father said, "It's made in the eighties? ... Then it has to be pretty gay." I FIND THE QUESTION ANSWERED IN THE AFFIRMATIVE.

SIng it, sister! ♥ (Actually, I relistened to SCAN again, and it suddenly hit me -- couldn't Holmes possible have played up his fascination for Irene Adler to make Watson jealous? Because that seems more logical than him suddenly getting the hots for a random woman, imho.)

To consider that your reward. There are many lovely moments in that adaptation. (Essays = giant pains, y/y/mfy?)

:D, not that I am tyrannical and scary or anything...

Camper than a row of tents. Cannot forget the way he smokes a cigarette, either. I mean, Adam Ant wishes he was that camp (to follow along the 80's theme).

Oooh, I like that idea (and not just because I love jealous!Watson, either). Thing is, Irene outsmarted him, yeah, but it wasn't exactly a great stroke of genius. She was just better-than-average at keeping a secret and seriously it would have been more clever if she was keeping the photograph in her bodice or something. SCAN does not impress me except that I like the bit with the king because he seems to be making a conscious effort to outcamp Holmes. As far as blackmailers go, at least Milverton was a badass.

Essays suck in a bad way. Especially essays on things you don't care even a little bit about.

No, not at all, dear...

God, yes, te cigarettes. And how he brandishes the letter in the Granada adaptation of THOR. Spinning around on his feet, holding the paper between two fingers, giving it to Watson over his shoulder, looking at Watson over his shoulder and roll his eyes dramatically -- really, Holmes? Try to be subtle, please.
(I am appalingly young and had to google Adam Ant. Good god above. I don't know what is worst -- that a man can look like that, or that the last three great Holmses out-camp him by a mile.)

I always found it amusing that in the original story, Holmes only quotes others when he says Adler is gorgeous, but he calls Norton "dark, tall and dashing" in his own words. And this is the story people use to claim Holmes is heterosexual. Pfft.
(The king is hilarious. He is so pompous and annoying and "appalingly over-dressed".)

Godspeed, my friend. Just tell me when I need to send a rescue team to save you from ennui.
