I got to go to my very first Beekeeper's Association Meeting tonight! The room was packed and everyone who spoke was so knowledgeable and infused the whole evening with humor and light. They talked quite a bit about wooden ware, which are the hives and hive components, and shared insight into the trials and tribulations of beekeeping. Swarming, angry bees, stung neighbors...all of which sound as though they can be dealt with with some good old fashioned buddhist (sp) thinking and staying positive. What a beautiful metaphor for life in general! Everyone who had hives and spoke obviously cared about what they were doing. I'm so excited to get going my self!
My first class is at the end of February and I'm hoping to order my hive components before then as I was informed that it's best to have not one but two hives your first year, which means I'll be putting the hive boxes together and spending a little bit more time there than I had expected. I also had the chance to meet a beekeeper that is a friend of K's sister who I've been corresponding with for the last couple of months. He seems so nice and is willing to show me some of the ropes, which is hugely appreciated!
I'll try to document my journey here as I go. I have a feeling I'll want to remember many things about my first years and this could be a good forum to write it all down....
