I went to my sister's 21st birthday party in Allston last night...it was weirdly unexciting. Antonio and I spent most of the time scanning the crowd with a sociological eye, dividing the hipsters and bros into sub-tribes of threadbare-hat-wearers, flannel-shirt-and-necklace types, and so on. There was even one totally out of place example of a square-jawed-yet-elaborately-polite Boston Irish Catholic duo of brothers. Fascinating. Then a soon-to-be-gay nineteen-year-old boy packed a bowl for me and I smoked up for the first time in ages. We took a cab home and the cabbie complimented me on my hair, and then Antonio made me a grilled cheese sandwich and I was asleep by 3.

Clearly not my scene. Spending the previous portion of the night with Cara, Peg and Murder at Rosebud (where Helen, the waitress, told us elaborate, rambling stories about elephant babies she'd seen on Ellen) was much superior.

I also got to see Cate and Allison in between working over the weekend, and it really felt like no time had passed - I couldn't believe it had been nearly two years. Having them be able to come down from Toronto and talk about Edinburgh over coffees in the North End made all the transition in my life feel negligible, and the continuity much more striking.

We also got an unexpected package from Ally in the post this weekend containing a tartan rug and a book by a Scottish poet, along with a really lovely letter.

In conclusion: I love my friends...
