Title: Show Me How It Ends (1/1)
Pairing: Finn/Rachel
Rating: PG
Spoilers: Prom Queen
Summary: He can't let go. And he knows that makes him incredibly selfish, but he can't find a way for this to end. Post Prom.

It takes him a total of fifteen minutes to get to her place after Prom.

His lip is swollen and bruised, a small cut in the corner of his mouth. He's pretty sure he caused St. James more damage. The parking lot was empty and he pretty much just wants to forget everything that was said, because he feels like the wind has been ripped out of his chest and he can't breathe.

He's so fucking pissed at himself.

Her front light is on, and her dad's are probably home, so he doesn't want to rush up to the door and start banging on it loudly. Not the time for that. He waits, because her car isn't out the front, and he knew that she drove to Sam's that night before Prom and Breadsticks. So he waits.

Twenty three minutes later, she pulls into the driveway and he has opened his door and climbed out of his truck before she has even turned her car off. She sees him though, and instead of being shocked, she puts her hand up, snatching her bag up from the seat.

"Not now, Finn," she says sharply, "go home."

"No," he replies, and it kind of sounds completely blunt, but he thinks he wants it to sound like that. He wants her to see the urgency of the matter. He needs to talk to her.

"Finn..." she begins, and it almost sounds like a warning, but her voice has kind of softened a little, like she wants to give in. He knows she does, because he knows her better than anybody, and he hates that he is doing this to her, but he can't stop. He can't let go. And he knows that makes him incredibly selfish, but he can't find a way for this to end.

"I don't know what to tell you, Rach," he says, taking a step forward and he reaches his hand out to touch her but she pulls away. He kind of deserves it. "I fucked up."

She takes a sharp breath, and he knows it's because he swore and he could laugh because it's so damn cute, except this isn't the time to laugh.

"I'm ... I'm tired, Finn..." she says, and he questions what she is really tired of. She looks tired, and she looks emotionally drained. He is too. He knows he is the cause of it.

"I - I know. I need you to listen to me, okay? Please, just listen," he practically begs her, and he gets a hold of her hand this time because she has let her guard down. She doesn't pull away, and his stomach knots at the thought.

"I'm sorry for what I did. I'm sorry for hurting you, because I swear I never meant to. I just care about you so damn much and I don't want that - that -"

"No," she says, cutting him off. Her voice is soft, and she is shaking her head. She pulls her hand away and he immediately feels the loss of contact. "You don't get to tell me that anymore."

"Rachel I -"

"I said no, Finn," she responds, harder this time, and she begins walking up to her front porch. He grabs her by the hand again.

She turns around in a rush and he can see her eyes well up with tears, and he swears the lump in his throat grows bigger. He can't see anything but her, and that scares the ever-loving crap out of him. He grips her hand tighter when she tries to pull away and she begins to cry, taking a step forward. She has her bag in her hand and she hits him, hard, on the chest. Another time. She is crying harder, and she drops her bag, bringing her fist to his chest once more before he grabs her by the arms, stilling her.

"I can't, I can't-" she stutters, and his heart literally stops beating because he is doing this to her.

"Why can't you let me go?"

She says it so softly, he almost doesn't hear it, but he is holding her against his chest tighter than he ever has held anyone, and his cheeks are wet and everything and nothing makes sense anymore. He has never felt so broken, so torn, and he is holding in his arms the girl he loves and it should be simple, right? This should be the simplest thing in the world.

She pushes him away, and he swears he almost starts crying again just at the loss of contact. She is staring at him in a way that he has never seen her look at him before. He feels his heart break into a million pieces.

"This is killing me, Finn," she says, her voice thick, and her cheeks wet. It comes out as almost a whisper. "I can't do this anymore."

He opens his mouth to reply, but nothing comes out. She turns around and walks up to her porch, fishing out her key and opening the front door, disappearing behind it without another look.

The light goes out.

He sinks to the ground.

And behind the door she does the same.
