Characters: Rachel, Finn/Rachel
Words/Spoilers: 310, Journey
Summary: There was always Nationals, she remembers telling them. Like it was a certainty. It seems like another life.
Her house is empty when she gets home that night.
She knows her dads are away; it was a trip that was planned months ago and she wasn’t going to let them cancel for Regional’s. She always thought they would get to see her at Nationals. Because there was always Nationals, she remembers telling them. Always Nationals. Like it was a certainty. There was a time when she really believed that they would make it all the way. It seems like another life.
She reaches the door and turns the key in the lock. The house is dimly lit and she places her keys on the hook and dumps her bag on the side table. She kicks off her shoes and doesn’t care where they land. She thinks she should be hungry. Or thirsty. But she is so beyond that point that all she wants to do is curl into bed.
The hallway seems a mile long as she reaches her bedroom and she opens the door, turns off the side lamp and sits on her bed. She doesn’t bother changing. Her pillows seem the most comforting thing in the world at that moment and she sinks into them, curling over onto her side. She stares out the window and watches the rain against her window-pane.
She doesn’t hear the front door open. When she thinks back, she doesn’t even think she would have had the energy to care if it was someone breaking in. All she knows is that she hears footsteps up the staircase, along the hallway and reaching her room. Her bed sinks a little when she feels a body lie down beside her. She’s facing the window.
His arm curls around her waist, pulling her close to him and he rests his chin on the top of her head.
And she finally lets herself cry.
