I love being a media producer. In fact I am super jealous of my students in Communication... they are running around with digital sound recorders and videocameras; they get to take courses like screenwriting and sound for film... and there is an entire stream of their program calles Intermedia that does webdesign, computer animation, graphic design and the like. They are the coolest kids ever... some of whom to into Journalism, or film, or TV, or the music industry or academia. At least one member of Godspeed you Black Emperor and I think all of The Arcade Fire were once students in this dept. And I get to be one of the people that teaches them how to think, write and puts ideas in their head, about responsibility in media production, about messages and meanings and how they are constructed and circulated, about politics and activism. Its fairly cool.
But I digress, my point was about the jealousy, and how I want to do all of their production-y stuff. And specifically stuff with sound, as I'm missing radio. I might get involved in CKUT .. and I still might do a summer show on Trent Radio (Zahra, you still interested?). But I do like having some production experience.. like I'm listening to a station now called Radio Paradise
(check it out) and I noticed the sound suddenly drop..just slightly.. and I like knowing that the level was probably spiking just a little too much into the red and it had to be nudged down. I love knwoing that, its a connection across time, space and thought.
