I need help of the computer variety

So here's my problem. I have one computer, a Dell laptop. I would like to be wireless. I have a cable modem, a wireless router, and a wireless notebook adapter (both Linksys Wireless-G)). My Googling has led me to believe that I can be wireless without having another computer wired, but I can't find specific directions HOW (at least not directions intended for those as computer-illiterate as I am).

So I come to you all, hoping you have some advice for me, or perhaps a suggestion for where to ask. Thank you!
