Your 2019 Iowa Cubs

Aug 30, 2019 16:39

I had hoped to catch some Iowa Cubs games this summer, but only got one in. I was excited to see them do one game as the Iowa Caucuses, however that game did sell out, and won't get to see it.

They also played three games as the Demons, which is a nod to the Latinx community. They also lost all three of those games, according to a friend who is a big baseball and anti-Satan kind of guy.

I am glad I saw them at least once, and the game was fantastic. Literally, in every way, it was a 5-4 ending with the Cubs winning on a Philip Evans walk-off single.  It is a Friday night- queue the fireworks.

The game was against the Cubs rival, the Memphis Redbirds. I have a friend who is a big Cardinal fan and so I asked him if (as in the past), the Redbirds had any future talent. At this point, in the season, the Cardinals had called up anyone they might have needed. The Triple A team did have a couple of pitchers. Of note, Justin Williams did hit a foul ball our way, which was quite exciting and we took home. He was additionally also responsible for hitting in all four of the Redbirds runs.

The 2019 Cubs were a mix of things this year. The young talent has been fueling the Chicago Cubs who have been very competitive. Also, this year, some veterans like Craig Kimbrel and Ben Zobrist passed through temporarily, which is pretty exciting.

Evans played a few games with the Mets before coming to the Cubs organization. The Iowa Cubs were supplemented this year by players who had played in the Majors and were trying to get their groove back. Players like Ian Happ, and Carl Edwards Jr.

Edwards Jr pitched a hitless inning, Happ went 1-5, and Evans went 2-5 with 2 RBIS and some beautiful fielding as well.

Trevor Clifton started and pitched six innings. (which I think is 3 games in a row, I have seen him pitch).

Clifton and Mark Zagunis both have spent time in Chicago, but are young enough to be considered future talent.

From there on, the real star of this version of the Cubs is Trent Giambrone. He hit well at Cubs Spring training. He's short, but he's got power and speed, and in Cubs fashion, he can play multiple positions. (He went one for four).

Interestingly, we also caught a glimpse of Colin Rea. Rea came in as a pinch hitter to lay a successful sacrifice bunt in the 7th. Rea is a pitcher- indeed, he is the League's Pitcher of the Year.

Rea was a real prospect for the Padres, then the Marlins in 2015 and 2016- going 7-7 in the majors, before needing Tommy John surgery for his elbow.

This year, has been his to work back to the majors, and he had a 14-4 record with a 3.95 ERA.
