Notes: The first in a series of ten drabbles. Based of the "ten crows" rhyme, umm... the whole series doesn't have a title yet. Number two is also not written yet. This needs to be fine-tuned before I publicize it really, but... ehh.
The masks with which he personifies his depravity are made of bone, and he is careful making them as he is with nothing else: the cultivation of calcium deposits to make the rough shape he wants, whittling away the jagged edges and spikes with a kunai, the final polishing and fine detail etched with chakra. The hinged jaws were the most difficult part to perfect, since he carves the masks all of one piece, but practice leads to perfection and Kakuzu has so much time (and so many trials!) with which to practice. Carefully taking a kunai to the inside, and scraping away the layers of bone until the light shines through, is sometimes the only thing that stops him from slamming the same blade through Hidan's face.
The ox, the eagle, the lion: strength, freedom, ferocity. If a civilian sees him working at a mask on a park-bench they might be impressed, and offer money for such a fine piece of scrimshaw. Not that Kakuzu has many qualms, but these are some of the few things he will not part with for any sum. He learned the ultimate price of being willing to sell anything the first time.
And he must keep himself keenly aware of what he's given up, after all.
The fourth mask on his back is a human face.
