I don't think I've gone
skimboarding since I was 14 or 15, and even back then, it was on borrowed skimboards and so I didn't do it very often. Today, at the beach, I decided to give it a try, and paid for it dearly.
Here is a picture of my sprained ankle. You can see how swollen it is; there is a pocket of fluid (and lots of it!) right above where the bone is. It started swelling up as soon as I had fallen (and was sitting in the ocean like a big dork...and then had to be carried back to our spot on the beach by a couple of my guy friends), and we iced it right away. Thankfully, my friend Anna had some Aleve on her, and I'd taken that right away. I think treating it right away helped a little -- otherwise it would be more swollen than it looks in the following photo:
Anyway, it's all elevated and iced now, and I have an ankle brace around it for compression. I have taken two Advils (I don't have Aleve), and I'm in bed...but it still feels sore and tender and stiff, all at the same time. I've been hobbling around more than slowly. It took me awhile to gimp my way from my car to the front door (the price I pay to live alone!) tonight when I got home from the beach, but at least I've been able to walk a little -- which was NOT the story when it first happened.
I was determined to go to work tomorrow, despite the injury, but now I am thinking I won't be able to make it...especially because it's still swollen...and because I work somewhere that has a flight of stairs I must climb in order to get to my work area/computer, and without an elevator to assist me, I think it will take forever to get up and down...if I'm even able to do so.
