Sophie weighs in at a whopping 47 pounds. This entire time, at the groomers', she's been admitted as a 35-pound dog (any more than that and I think it is a bit costlier). It's a 12-pound lie! I can't believe I am not the only one in this household that is blatantly lying about her weight on important documents. Haha.
In any case, Sophie had her yearly shots and checkup today at Dr. K's (who costs me an arm and a leg, really, but Sophie LOVES her and her staff). Today, I was especially impressed with Dr. K's dog, Renee. Renee is a giant German Shepherd mix, and so well-behaved...she completely puts Sophie to shame. She lays down quietly and watches the office goings ons with her eyes darting back and forth...whereas Sophie looks like a wild dog that has recently been unleashed upon society, the way she runs around, completely overly-excited. Sometimes Sophie barks at the diagrams of the dogs on the wall. It's embarrassing. Anyway...only when Dr. K gives her the go-ahead does Renee approach and greet people, always calm and non-excited (although, when I remarked, "She's so calm! She's not over-excited!"...Dr. K said, "Oh, she does get excited!" and Renee wagged her tail, as if to show me that she was).
Sophie received a clean bill of health. Although I've been thinking she seems a bit overweight for a dog of her stature, Dr. K assured me she is not and that she's at a healthy weight. In fact, the most weight Sophie would be permitted to lose would be 1 pound, maybe 2 (Sophie has a decent "tuck" at her haunches). Betty thinks I'm being overly-critical of Sophie...you know, like how my mom is with me...but I'm just worried that even with all our walks and our playtime, Sophie isn't getting enough exercise.
I was especially proud of Sophie today, though: as it turns out, all our practice with examining her teeth has paid off. Randomly, over the last few months we've been living alone, I've been poking around Sophie's head nightly, checking out her teeth, ears, eyes...all while repeating, "Teeth...teeth! Good girl!" so that when Dr. K and her assistants give her a checkup, she'll be more cooperative. At her checkup today, she was almost perfect -- she didn't put up a fight when Dr. K was checking out her teeth, etc., as long as I kept repeating, "Teeth...teeth..." I was surprised she'd remembered...but very, very proud that she had. Haha.
I couldn't ask for a cuter dog -- wild one or not, she has character, and that's adorable.
