The Lovecraft Anthology, volume 1; ed. Dan Lockwood

Graphic story collection of various Lovecraft short stories: "The Call of Cthulhu", "The Haunter of the Dark", "The Dunwich Horror", "The Colour Out of Space", "The Shadow Over Innsmouth", "The Rats in the Walls", and "Dagon". Good story selection, though I misremembered "The Rats in the Walls" as being the story "Dreams in the Witch-House" when I picked it up at Dragon*Con.

Beautiful art. I am especially fond of the artist who used Escher designs in depicting the non-Euclidean geometry of R'lyeh. "Dagon" is just utterly gorgeous all around. Great choices in showing how messed up things got in "The Colour Out of Space", and sassy Professor Armitage makes me giggle. He had great facial expressions in "The Dunwich Horror".

Translating the stories to comic form does really show you how much things do not happen in the present of Lovecraft's stories. Most of them are told at one remove from the person actually experiencing and doing things.

"The Shadow Over Innsmouth" leaves out some of the stuff from the original short story, especially at the end, but I think it makes for a tighter and better story this way. While "The Dunwich Horror" is well done, I think it cushions the impact of the story. The descriptions, especially of the whippoorwills' shrieking, always struck me hard in that particular story.

Also, "The Haunter of the Dark" continues to be endlessly amusing when you know it's part of him and Robert Bloch trading stories where they kill off each other.
