"Did you see the look on his face- EEEEEE!"
Mako and Bolin both blinked as Korra darted over to the giant white wolfdog sitting by their lockers. She pulled it into a ferocious bear-hug, then proceeded to roughly pet the dog. It politely tolerated the rough-handling, tilting its head to let her scritch here and there.
"Look at you! You are so pretty! Though, seriously, why come like this? Do they not let council members into see matches or something? Awww, are your ears itchy? Oh yes they are! Oh yes they are!"
The wolfdog looked this close to falling into Korra's lap and never leaving.
Mako and Bolin exchanged glances. Mako's said he sure as heck wasn't asking but was their teammate crazy? He'd always thought she was crazy. Just a little bit.
Bolin rolled his eyes and ambled over to ask. "Uh, Korra? Friend of yours?"
"Not really," she replied blithely. "Don't look at me like that, you know you aren't. It's just nice to have a bit of home show up here. There were always wolfdogs around at the South Pole. I guess at the North Pole too, huh?"
".... Okay then."
She gave them both a look, the one Bolin had come to recognize as her 'wait, you guys don't know what's going on' look. "This is Councilman Tarrlok. He's an adult Water Tribesman, so he can turn into a wolf. It's part of what happens when you become an adult."
Bolin just kind of stared at her. Faintly, he was aware of Mako doing the same thing.
"So..." he said after a while, "you'll be able to turn into a wolf?"
"Nah. I'm the Avatar."
What that had to do with the price of tea in the Fire Nation capital, Bolin didn't have a clue. "-Can I pet him?"
"Bolin!" Mako sounded scandalized.
"I don't know." Korra glanced at the wolfdog. "Can he?"
The wolfdog's tail thumped against the ground.
"Sure. It's fine."
"Bolin!"
"What?" Bolin squatted down on his heels and softly ran his hand down the wolfdog's back. "He's okay with it."
Mako gave them both an evil look. "Even if it's true that's the councilman and Korra isn't pulling our legs-"
"Hey!"
"-you don't just go pet people."
"You do when they say you can!" Korra huffed. "If he didn't want to be petted, he'd have made that pretty clear by now."
"Why are you even petting him if that's Tarrlok?" Mako demanded.
"Because his ears are itchy!"
Bolin just continued to run his hand up and down the wolfdog's back while Korra and Mako argued. The white fur was amazing and a whole lot cleaner than a lot of the street mutts he normally ran across. The idea that it was a guy, too, was pretty cool, though he wasn't sure how much he believed that. Sure, Korra was the Avatar, but he and Mako had grown up here. They'd know if Waterfolk turned into wolfdogs, right?
The wolfdog's tail thumped against the floor.
He'd gotten lost once, in Red Monsoon territory, and a white wolfdog had grabbed him by the pants and dragged him off to Shady Shin. The other guy had been madder than a volcano, but he hadn't been willing to tear into Bolin until the dog was gone.
... If he mentioned that to Mako, Mako would probably freak out even more.
"You don't have to pet him if you don't like it!" Korra all but hauled the wolfdog into her lap, making a face at Mako. "I like wolfdogs, though, and I'm petting him!"
