In the Fire Nation, Sokka has a vision. His vision appears at one of Zuko's dances. Her hair gleams white against dark skin, the effect striking.
It strikes him in the heart.
Black cloth like clouds slides down her shoulders and hangs over her arms. She raises her hand to his, and he sees black slide back, long tails of it dangling towards the floor.
He takes her hand, and the torchlight catches on the jewels on her bodice. Or maybe the jewels give off light themselves. They glitter and gleam, bright stars against the black bodice. Some part of him wants to touch them, but he doesn't think copping a feel is going to go over well.
Zuko says stars burn, but he doesn't feel any heat as she presses up against him.
"Another dance?" she asks when the music ends, and he knows these dances aren't the ones that she came for. But he dances with her again and again, until his limbs are leaden, until he doesn't have the sense to think 'Suki' when she leads him into the garden.
Black swirls around her legs, bleeding into shadow. His knees hit the grass, and his hand hits her calf-
Black is nothing more than shadow.
