She was quiet the rest of the afternoon. Why her? He was a Dai Li, and a man of Ba Sing Se. There were thousands of women in the city, tens of thousands. Why did he want to take her to dinner?
(She hadn't hesitated at all in saying no, but if she'd met him out of uniform...)
In the morning, the Dai Li returned with an invitation from General How to speak with their leader. Suki frowned at the invitation, and Kitana didn't frown at the Dai Li.
At the party that evening, Kitana felt like an awkward little girl. She hadn't felt like that since she was old enough to train as a Kyoshi Warrior, but being around the women of Ba Sing Se high society made her feel every inch small and ugly and dirty.
"The way Lady Baratsi acts, you'd think no one knew about how her stableboy loves her," his voice murmured soft and low in her ear, the emphasis on 'loves' making her flush with realization. "Drink?"
"No," she said, and the Dai Li nodded and drifted on.
After that, though, Kitana straightened her shoulders and threw herself into the party. It might be stuffy and formal, but it didn't have to be anymore than she had to be a lady.
In three days, the Kyoshi Warriors readied themselves to leave. Avatar Aang had been given an appropriate honor-guard, but he seemed like he would be flitting all over the world for at least a year. Another year on top of the one they've already lost to the War was too much for some of the girls. They needed to go home and bring news back to Kyoshi Island.
Suki meant to stay, though, and she asked for volunteers to stay with her. Kitana considered it.
She met the Dai Li as she wandered down the street. For the first time, she looked hard under the brim of his hat, taking in the hazel eyes and surprisingly young face. Not as young as she was - he was definitely a man - but younger than she would have thought for the Dai Li.
Kitana looked hard at him, and he raised his eyebrows, mouth quirking in a smile. She snorted and shook her head, and he nodded and passed on by.
And a hand of stone offered her flowers.

I like the way Kitana's reactions to him change through the story, short as it is. I really want to see more of them. <3333
