Las Vegas: Ozai & Hakoda, "Just because you can't see the stars doesn't mean they aren't there."beckyh2112July 22 2010, 03:07:21 UTC
The swimming pool was still open at four AM. Hakoda was more shocked that he wasn't surprised by that than by the fact itself. Most of the lights were off, save for a few safety lights lining the path and the lights below the water in the pool itself. The light rising from the city below, though, kept it more than bright enough for a man used to the country.
He expected to be alone up there, but someone floated in the water. Said someone twisted in the water, and he saw it was the Asian from the roulette table. Ozai, the owner of the casino, according to the business card he'd left in Hakoda's pocket.
Ozai regarded him silently. Hakoda returned the favor, wading into the pool. He paused to let his body adjust to the temperature; it's warmer than the crisp night air, which made it feel warm for a pool. Getting out would be hell.
Then he began to swim, lapping the pool once, twice, three times. Ozai said nothing, settling back into a comfortable float on his back. His hair spreads in the water, a long cloud of darkness. It's almost distracting, except Hakoda had plenty of other things to think about. Mama was enjoying the casino, Katara was enjoying... someone that had left her looking like Kya as a teenager after a makeout session, Sokka had only stumbled back to their hotel room an hour ago, Bato was leaving tomorrow to nip up to one of the state parks, and Pakku was... doing whatever Pakku did when he wasn't annoying Hakoda or spending time with Hakoda's children.
He climbed out of the pool after his seventh lap, shivering as the night air struck him. The far edge of the horizon was just barely turning a different shade of dark.
"What are you doing?" He found himself asking as he picked up his towel.
There was silence for a long time. Then, "Star-gazing."
Hakoda tilted his head up, looking at the endless black depths of the night. Then he glanced back at the man in the pool.
Ozai's mouth quirked in a smile. "Las Vegas is too bright, isn't it? But they're still there."
Hakoda snorted. "You want to see stars, you come out where I live."
"Is that a promise?"
Hakoda huffed at the leer he heard in the Asian's voice and stalked off.

Yay! So much better than what I could have done with the same prompt. *grins* So Hakoda did notice what Katara'd been doing, I like his mental assessment of the trip and how the piece isn't in Ozai's point of view. Also they way the prompt was included without actually stating it was nice as it's a fairly awkward sentence.
