His mother wouldn't care at all, of course, except to be disappointed that he'd mistepped at all. She could practically run over twigs, even in her heavy Kyoshi robes.
He glanced over his shoulder and grinned. "Come on, Sozin."
The other boy merely crossed his arms again, glaring at the wrought iron footbridge over the pond as if it had personally offended him. Of course, Mama always said he had too much of Firelord Zuko's temper, and Papa always said he had too much of Toph's temper.
Sozin studied the bridge, then stomped one bare foot hard against the ground. The pond-water trembled and the turtleducks squawked, but whatever earthbending he'd done, it didn't seem to do anything else.
Of course, ever since his mother had started teaching him to earthbend, he'd sometimes do it just to make the ground shake. Gyatso figured if he could airbend or firebend, he'd be doing it all the time too.
He cocked his head. "So... You coming?"
Sozin flashed a grin. "Sure."
The Crown Prince didn't smile for hardly anyone, not even his parents. Gyatso felt a little surge of triumph at the sight of that fleeting grin.
Then he jumped off the end of the railing and discovered Sozin had turned the earth on the other side into quicksand.
