He's not supposed to tell his dad about that just yet. Or about what Grandfather Ozai has been teaching him. Or what Aunt Ty Lee has been teaching him, either.
If Hitoshi hadn't sat through a couple of his dad's court days before, he'd think Dad was the most oblivious person in the entire world.)
"You can't be the Avatar," he argues from his perch in the tree branches. "The Avatar doesn't work with the Blue Spirit. The Blue Spirit is against the Avatar ( ... )

Lil' Ursa is adorable and clearly has traits of Mama and Aang and seems to be doing well despite the situation of how her existence came to be.

Hitoshi loves his Grandfather Ozai! Everyone else is disturbed by this, but there's not much they can do about it. (Also, I kind of forgot about Mai's family. >_>) I must include Tom-Tom in the future!
Lil' Ursa is so much adorable. She is going to grow up feisty! And I think everyone is just very politely pretending she's Zuko's child. MAI HAD A VERY LONG PREGNANCY, OKAY?

I guess it's kinda hard to tell a kid that Grandfather was gonna totally bake everyone in the Earth Kingdom. It's sorta breaks a wee brain. (Also, everyone forgets Mai's parents. They're boooring. I don't care about them!) I just like Tom-Tom. I even have a toy crackship for him that ISN'T Hope.
*Lil Kya wants to trade in her twin for Ursa.* Ursa might eventually figure it out, and I'm guessing Aang will respect Mai and Zuko's wishes and keep a mentor-ly distance. Does Ozai spoil her rotten in hopes to spite Zuko?

Someone will eventually explain it to the kids. I am not sure it will change Hitoshi's opinion much, because clearly Grandfather Ozai does not do that ANYMORE.
... People ship Hope/Tom-Tom?
See, if Zuko had known and agreed with Mai having sex with Aang, the fact she had a kid with him wouldn't be a big deal. But because he didn't know and therefore couldn't agree, it was adultery. Which is bad. So everyone pretends Zuko is Ursa's father. (My Fire Nation is big on the passion, but you don't betray your spouses and your firstborn kid is always in wedlock if you can possibly help it. Right of the Firstborn and all.)
Ozai spoils all of his grandchildren.

Because they're both under the age of three. *sagely nods*
So everyone (outside of family and friends) has forgotten that Zuko ran away with that FLOOZY for nearly a year since he didn't get Katara pregrant?
*Amuses her brain with Fire Nation style shotgun weddings.* My headcanon is close, though some of the Royals do get away with it at times. And FN is extremely xenophobic at the moment and for a few generations after. They frown upon marriage between Firefolk and other folk.
*Pets your Ozai, it's so nice to see him portrayed as such a complex man.*

CLEARLY.
No, they haven't forgotten. It is just a very polite fiction that everyone is maintaining, because the alternative makes no one happy. (MAI HAD A VERY LONG PREGNANCY. ZUKO GOT HER PREGNANT BEFORE HE LEFT. YEAH. THAT'S THE TICKET.)
Interesting. You know, I am not sure if any of my FN people actually marry outside of the FN, though several of them have kids with people who aren't FN.
He also has a tendency to adopt random girl-children. He seems to like having daughters better than having sons. (Song. Tian. Mi-Cha. Though Hyo objects to that one.) Of course, he is still not a very good father, but he is good at the whole "I will kill anyone who hurts you" thing.

As long as Hitoshi and Ursa gets snuggles and bedtime stories and have love, I'm okay with this.
In my brain, I think it somehow twisted during Azulon's reign. Sozin never really cared about the marriage thing and probably had to think of the Fire Nation to get a heir.
... Ozai's relationship with Song in your headspace amazes me and gives Hyo all the right to worry about this adoption process. xD

Yeah, Azulon is good for fucking things up. Ozai. Though my headcanon Azulon is quite the womanizer. He has many bastards, both FN and EK.
Sometimes he's sleeping with her, sometimes he views her as an adopted daughter. It's odd. Hyo is, however, perfectly capable of keeping Ozai away from Mi-Cha.

... don't get me started on Azulon. I get very annoyed when I see someone giving Azulon any credit or portrays him as an honorable man. He's an awful, terrible, evil man who did worse than Ozai. Iroh was the exception of Azulon's ability to fuck things over and I pity poor Ilah for being married to him.
Does it depend on whom Song is with?

If you do the time calculation, the obliteration of the Southern Water Tribe was during Azulon's reign, not Ozai's. Ozai is certainly not innocent of doing horrible things, but Azulon has done a lot more horrible things to the world at large. *needs to get back to her Ozai-growing-up story*
I think Ozai is opposed to Song being 'with' anyone. They're not good enough for his adopted daughter.
