Memoirs of a B-School student #16: Speedreading

Sep 19, 2007 20:20

I just took a 2-hour speed-reading seminar with Kathleen Hawkins.  Within an hour, I had increased my reading speed by 50% AND my comprehension by 15%.

Such simple skills.  Absolutely remarkable.  And incredibly useful.  I hope I can continue this in all my future reading.

I really need to learn how to do that. Why didn't I ever pick up one of those courses when they were on our campus at MSU? I have no idea. Any tips you could give me?

Hard to really summarize in quick-tip format. I can say this--skim first, then as you read, brush your hand below each line you read so that your eyes are following just above your fingers. Reason for this is, if you scan something with your eyes, they generally follow in a jerky movement (just watch someone else outline something with their eyes). If you follow your hand, your eyes move more smoothly and will catch more information. Also, look just for key words like nouns and verbs.

Best I can do in such a short format. :)
