Kristen: "Mom, I want to give you your mothers day present because I'm not sure if I'll see you that weekend."
*mom opens card that says "happy mothers day to grandma"*
Mom: "Wait, I think this is for someone else...... Wait a min......you....."
*Kristen opens box with pregnancy test and shows to mom*
Mom: "What! You're pregnant?! Oh my God!"
She was thrilled. Of course, she then proceeded to flip out as she found out how many people knew about it before her, as if it was a practical joke we played on her. ("You knew about this? Wait, you knew too? You knew too?! I can't believe you guys...")
She was happy to find out that no one had told my grandma yet, so she called her right away.
"Hi, what are you doing?.....Laundry? ..... Oh. Well, do you have a chair?....... Find a chair........ Yes, go get a chair.......OK, sit down.......I have some news....... No, Beth isn't engaged......... No, I haven't sold my house........ OK, well, how many great-grandchildren do you have?......... You're not sure?......... Oh....... OK, it doesn't matter--you're going to have one more because Kristen is pregnant."
Beth's friend was there with her baby, so the whole afternoon turned into playing with the baby and talk of babies and pregnancy. And every once in a while, my mom would suddenly remember a conversation or situation from the last few weeks that might have given away the pregnancy, but obviously she never caught on. She would rest her forehead in her hands, laughing "oh, my gosh" or "oh, jeez." What a great time. I'm very glad to have it all out in the open now, and I'm very glad to have the opportunity to just be excited about it.
ADD: When I was leaving, I gave my mom a hug and said, "Bye, grandma." She replied with, "Hrrmph. I'm not really used to that one yet." :)
