From the lowly Parlour Maids to the wealthy General of the Dragoons, from wordy flatterers to the blank stares of the pragmatics, from sex-addicts to enclosed prudes, Arthur Schnitzler's La Ronde creates for us a startingly vivid image that imputes all of humanity to fall in love.
La Ronde portrays 10 characters, 10 archetypes which speak for us all, in a ritualistic yet realistic round dance where the first character leaves his first partner for a second, and the second leaves the first for a third encounter, and in the end the tenth meets the first. But more than 10 romantic encounters in 10 scenes, the play speaks of how desirable and fleeting is romance.
Why do we throw everything away for a glimpse of light in the darkness? Is it worth it?
Tanghalang Ateneo's 32nd Season opener aims to answer that question.
