I put up a post asking for lyric prompts. This is the answer to the first one, left by merriman

Title: Clean
Author: Becky_H
Character: Reid, Hotch.
Word Count: 300
Rating: PG
Prompt: Everybody needs a place to stand
And a method for their schemes and scams.
If I could only get my record clean
I'd be a genius.

“What? You can’t write this up, Hotch.”

They were in Hotch’s office, the door closed and blinds tilted downward for privacy. Not that everyone else didn’t know what was going on. Hotch wouldn’t be doing this unless one of them hadn’t come to him about it, and, Reid was sure, if one of them knew they all knew.

“I don’t have a choice, Reid. You’re behaving erratically, your job performance is affected, you’re a danger in the field....”

Reid paced a couple of steps away, then came back and put his hands on Hotch’s desk. “What if. What if you write it up but don’t file it yet?”

Hotch leaned back in his chair and studied Reid’s face.

Reid could almost see the thought processes going on behind Hotch's eyes. He held his breath and bit his lower lip. He wanted to convince Hotch; he needed to wait Hotch out.

“What are you thinking?” Hotch finally asked.

Reid let the breath he’d been holding out with a rush of words. “Write it up. Just don’t file it for... a month. I’ll find a program. Do random drug tests. If I fail one, or my behaviour in the field stays dangerous, file it. Give me a chance to fix this, Hotch.” He sounded almost as desperate as he felt. If this ended up in his file his career was gone, at the very least.

Hotch stayed quiet for another second. Then he nodded, very slightly. “Don’t make me regret this.”

“I won’t. You won’t. I- Thank you.” He was so relieved he thought for a second he was going to faint.

Apparently, a trip to the principal’s office and a mark on his permanent record was still more motivation than being bullied by his classmates. Big surprise -- not.
