Oscars 2010 - Good, Bad and Ugly!

Mar 08, 2010 18:35

No, I didn't stay up 'til *stupid* o'clock to watch the ceremony (been there - done that, got the sleep deprevation to prove it!). I taped it via my handy dandy DVR (and made judicious use of the FF button this morning;))

So - being possibly one of the few women who watch as much for the clothes as for the films... I give you my take on events!

I haven't seen The Hurt Locker but I couldn't help but cheering when Katherine Bigelow was awarded the Best Director gong. She is the first woman in 82 *years* to win. May she not be the last!

The 'stars' of the animated films talking about being nominated - Not least Dug licking the camera;) SQUIRREL!!

Neil Patrick Harris' opening number. Impressive! I didn't catch Hugh future ex-Mr Beckymonster! last year but I heard he did well. If he doesn't come back (I wasn't impressed by Messers Baldwin and Martin) can NPH take over?

Up won 'Best Animated'. Deservedly so! Yes, it would have been made of awesome if the equally fantastic Coraline had won (as Neil Gaiman was in the audience) but it was not to be. Pete Docter's speech was just lovely. And he was wearing the 'Ellie' badge too.

STAR TREK WON AN OSCAR!!!! I repeat - Star Trek won an Oscar for the first time EVAR!! Yes, it was for make-up (and it should have been nommed for Best Picture - alongside District 9!) but - it's now an Academy Award winning picture!

Michael Giamanchio winning the 'Best OST' award for Up. He created two of the best soundtracks of last year (Up and Star Trek) so to see him win for one of them was just amazing.
I also think he gave the best speech of the night - encouraging children everywhere to indulge in their creative side. They may not end up as Oscar winners but it will make 'em great human beings.

Sigourney Weaver - is now a good time to admit that I have a bit of a crush on Ms Weaver? The woman is hewn from awesome and can show modern actresses a thing or two about looking beautiful and kicking ass!
Loved her annecdote about arriving at Sheperton, admiring the sets for Alien... only to see 'em wrecked by said nasties!;)

District 9 making the cut in a number of awards. Okay, it didn't *win* anything but mark these words... Neil Blokamp and Sharlto Copley will be back!

Tron Legacy can now market itself as having an Academy award winner in it's cast - as Jeff Bridges now has an Oscar;)

I loved Colin Farrell's story about going on a bender to Mexico with Jeremy Renner (nominated for The Hurt Locker) and how it ended with them sharing a bed, spooning... Uh huh - I *believe* you... thousands wouldn't and are no doubt writing RPS about it even now!

Changing tack now...

Rubbing the proverbial salt in said proverbial wound by getting the very lovely Chris Pine to introduce the clips of District 9. Star Trek should have been nommed!! I might shut up about this in about five years time!

All the talking heads! Whenever it cuts to a break in the US, the channel showing the ceremony over here cuts to the talking heads in the studio - thank frak for the FF button!

No fifth award for the utterly wonderful Nick Park - Wallace and Gromit were robbed people!

The use of interpretive dance for 'Best Original Score' - o_O?! And I *love* dance! Although - Sherlock Holmes does have great music. And okay, they get points for using the beautiful 'The Ellie Badge' track for Up (it's what you hear over the end frames of the film - with the ice cream and what happened to the house)

Talking of music - will someone have a quiet word with the broadcast's sound mixer(s)? Was it necessary for the orchestra to be so loud that viewers couldn't hear the names of the presenters?!

The opening skit by Messers Baldwin and Martin - if I had sat up to 2am (for reals!) to watch, I'd be falling asleep after that!

Ben Stiller as a Na'vi. Oookay!

Doing a segment to 'honour' horror movies - can we have one to honour Sci-Fi next year? Pretty please? (Not a horror fan - so boring!)

And now the ugly - which was me talking with my mum when I was watching the announcement of 'Best Make Up' - I poo pooed Star Trek winning because - The Academy Do Not Do Science Fiction (I think Return of the King was the last SF/F film to win this catergory), saying it would be The Young Victoria... Never been so glad to say I was wrong *evar!*

As for the clothes - most looked lovely but some were meh (the reliance on ruffles was not a good look) but some like Ms Weaver and Dame Helen Mirren were just amazing. Empire has pictures!

So yes, that's done and done for another year. I need to watch more films, that much I know!

movies, awards season
