I have plenty to bend ears about (Cars! Bond Movies! Fannish Stuff!) but for now...
I'm going to say something I *never* thought I would say in my persona journal... so brace yourselves... *cough*
Thank you
Rupert Murdoch for letting me get to see this *gem* of a film FIVE MONTHS before it is released in the UK.
All legal, all above board. Whomever gave up their tickets to this so-sold-out-it-wasn't-funny-screening. *Thank you*. You made me a very happy little monster, though I still reserve the right to doubt your sanity!
I'll try to be as spoiler free as humanely possible for those who haven't seen it yet but rest assured, Pixar do it again. Create yet another undisputed classic film that pushes the boundaries, makes you ache from laughing and from having your heart broken (but put back together as good as new!) and all in the space of four minutes at one point.
It's the story of Carl and Ellie - who meet as children, brought together by a love of adventure. Love keeps them together for nearly seventy-eighty years (told in the most heartbreakingly *beautiful* four minute montage you'll see all damn year. Trust me, if you cried within the first five minutes of Star Trek you'll blub at this. Resistance *is* futile) until Ellie passes on and Carl's reason to live goes with her.
Just when it all gets to be too much, Carl ties hundreds of balloons to his house in an effort to fly to Paradise Falls (where he and Ellie wanted to go all their lives). Except, he doesn't go alone and what he finds there isn't what he expected either.
It's no hyperbole for me to say that Pixar are in a league of their own. I can't think of any studio or auteur who can match these guys for sheer wonder. Okay, Cars wasn't one of their best, but it still knocks the stuffing out of any other animated (and quite a few live action films) from other studios.
The use of colour, the use of music (Michael Giacchino supplying a soundtrack to equal his *awesome* music for Star Trek. That's another soundtrack for the collection), the use of imagery, the use of sound... *pauses for an interlude gleeful handflapping*. Truly, it's that good.
It goes without saying that it's one of my top films of 2009. The only downside is that I have to wait until
October 16th to see this masterpiece again. But I will... and there will be another review post then too;)
So... if you can, go! see! You won't regret it!
