The 2007 List The 2008 List AUSTRALIA
Two things going for this movie - i) it's a huge improvement on Pearl Harbour which covered similar territory and ii) Hugh Jackman (hubba, hubba!)
Recommendation? - worth a DVD rental certainly.
DEFIANCE
Based on the true story of three Russian Jewish brothers who took to the local forest to escape the Nazis and helped to save about 1200 others in the process.
A little overlong but Daniel Craig proves that there is a lot more to him than just *that* number.
Recommendation? - worth a DVD rental. Cinema if you like true stories
VALKYRIE
Again, based on a true story - the last, major, plot against Hitler. Yes, it's got Tom Cruise in it but it's another zinger from Bryan Singer and it has pretty much every English actor of note bar McKellen and Stewart!;)
Recommendation? - Go see!
MILK
Oh, look - another true story (it's Oscar Season - this will happen a lot!) about the first gay man to be elected to major political office in the U.S. and how he paid the price for pushing for equality.
A Film Of The Year. While I have quibbles (um... where were the women/lesbians?) this is a superb film that should be seen by everyone, especially in light of Recent Events.
Recommendation? - Go see! Now!
NOTORIOUS
Lo, Beckymonster continues her watching of directors that Tony DiNozzo would fanboy!;) Considered to be the anti-Casablanca. Excellent thriller and a superb film.
Recommendation? - Well worth a watch.
SUPERMAN RETURNS
lovelovelovelovelovelove. One of my favourite movies ever, the end.
Recommendation? - well worth a watch.
LA BELLE ET LE BETE
An undisputed classic. If you've never seen it... do!
Recommendation? - well worth a watch.
SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE
A damn fine film that is a worthy Oscar winner... cheering at the end is perfectly reasonable behaviour!;)
Recommendation? - well worth a watch.
THE DARK CRYSTAL
One of my favourite films as a child (I went to see it as a birthday treat when I was v. young) and still just as brilliant even now. Fizzgig pwns all.
Recommendation? - well worth a watch.
FANTASIA 2000
Some bits didn't work (Steve Martin) others worked a treat (Rhapsody in Blue). Certainly worth a look see.
QUANTUM OF SOLACE
Still one of the best films of last year. Fact.
Recommendation? - well worth a watch.
ANVIL!: THE STORY OF ANVIL
An intriguing doco about living your dreams and sometimes... they come true. Contains the best last scene of a film I've seen this year.
Recommendation? - worth a DVD rental if you like rawk music
THE YOUNG VICTORIA
A very pretty dramatisation of the early reign of Queen Vic. Can't speak for the historical accuracy, but I enjoyed it
Recommendation? - worth a DVD rental certainly
