Two *years* of 'NCIS is a good show but the fanfic is cr*p' has led up to this

Dec 01, 2008 10:14

I originally wrote this last night. I've had a chance to (literally) sleep on it, so it still stands.

(anything I say is my opinion and nowt to do with ncis_newsletter - pretentious but necessary!)

Okay - so recently, I've been dealing with a whole bunch of crap. None of which I've mentioned because, hey! This journal is all about the squee.

Stuff like worrying about money, my car, work, professional exams etc. Not to mention that my e-mail has been on the fritz, my phone is not working... argh! This is not me making excuses, not justifying crap. Just giving the lay of the land. For those of you who are curious or care.

Fandom, as ever, has been my happy place. Okay, one of my two main shows is making me crazy with the not knowing. That will be you, Doctor Who.
Not to mention, that the source of the rumour about the main front runner is someone I used to know at University. Politeness forbids me to say more in such a public place. In a not so public place (e.g. a bar) I might say a bit more. And have done in the past.

So, until the 'Eleven' matter has been settled, Who will be kept at a short distance (of about three paces). Better for both that way.

NCIS has been bringing the awesome, canon-wise. I'm not completely up to date (not seen the latest one yet) but what I have seen I've pretty much loved unconditionally. So that's one consolation.

So - what's pee'ing me off?

Apart from the fact that my muse is pretty much MIA at present (I've struggled 'valiantly' with mini_nanowrimo but it's been like pulling teeth) - it's reading in another journal that my writing (I wasn't singled out but it didn't matter) and the writing of everyone else in NCIS fandom is sh*t.

Not to mention that everything that has been rec'ed is just as crappy as well. So pardon me if I get a bit narked at being told that I can't write and I wouldn't know a good fic if it bit me!.

Yes, in their defence, they were talking about the fandom as a whole but... I haven't seen them write for NCIS. If I have, then I have missed their masterpiece, from which I should take an example of how to make my work far better than what it could ever be right now. (turns off the sarcasm)

Am I angry? - yes. This is meant to be *fun* for me. I'm sure the same goes for a lot of other people. Someone telling me that my writing and my recommendations are sh*t is not conductive to happiness. Again, I *know* it wasn't aimed at me.

While my response might be 'read' as being a bit 'dramatic', no harm was meant and I'd defend their right to say such things... This ain't the first time I've heard this complaint (it's a broken record with this fandom - I've been hearing it for two years and change now). Sometimes you can't help to take it to heart and then you just have to be today's boom (random Babylon 5 reference ftw!)

Constructive criticism on fics I've written, that's fine. I'm a big girl, I can take it (make your own comments about bridges for sale!). To hear it time and time again from people who haven't even written anything themselves for that fandom (to your knowledge)... Not so good.

I'm not a great writer - never will be. I'm here to make the ones who are good, look better. I prefer to be classed as 'average' rather than 'medicore';) It would make my f*cking year (this one or any one) to be recc'ed on my own merits on crack_van for my NCIS fic. I've been rec'ced for my SG-1 writing and that was just awesome (sad, but so sodding true. I am nowt if not honest!)

I'm not saying that there aren't crap writers in this fandom, because, dude, there are! (The management would like to point out that the afore mentioned has nothing to do with anyone on my flist You guys can *write*! See above for the newsletter disclaimer!) I *will* not mention names - (horses for courses etc!) but they are out there.

What I'm trying to say to to anyone who may have the opinion that there are no good writers in NCIS fandom...

WRITE for the love of the FSM. You can see what's wrong - so do it better then. Quit bitching and get writing! NCIS fandom is always on the look out for fresh flesh... braaains... blood to drink new talent. Show us 'crap' writers where we are going wrong by example. Bitching isn't going to improve the quality of fic you're reading. Leading by example will.

And now, I am done.

oh crap!, ncis
