I started writing this story.... and unfortunately haven't finished it... but thought I'd still share it with you so far
OK, there’s the sun, so that direction is up!
We woke up early one morning. We weren’t quite sure where we were but we could feel that it was going to be a hard road ahead. My older brother Johnny always walked behind me because he wanted me to check out what was coming up ahead before he got there. We didn’t have many supplies with us, which was good considering I was the one carrying almost everything.
Johnny had said to me: “Max, I’ve got the map and I’m working out where to go so you have to take the other stuff”.
I tried to tell him that whoever was at the front should have the map, but he didn’t listen.
It wasn’t long after we stated walking that we came across our first hurdle. I don’t really know how to explain just how big it was. Johnny and I had never seen a bush so big before -it must have been at least five times the size of us. We pushed the huge leaves aside: climbing over and under and over and under the huge stems.
It took ages to get through that bush, so the time we slide down off that final leaf both Johnny and I were exhausted. We put all our gear down in a small clearing so we could have a short rest.
“I’m just going to have a little look around, I won’t be long Johnny”, I said.
“Mmm…” was the only reply I got, meaning Johnny, once again was not listening to me.
I took the map with me, to see if I could find a fairly easy looking road. Unlike Johnny I was a pretty good navigator, and so it only took a couple of minutes to find an straightforward route. When I got back, I realised I should not have left Johnny alone, especially not with the bag of food. He had consumed everything. All the food and water I had been carrying, suppose to last both of us the whole journey, Johnny had eaten in a matter of minutes. As furious as I was I realised there was no point arguing. I remembered I still had the map so I simply said
“Johnny, I have the map and now I’m working out where to go so you have to take the other stuff”.
Johnny finally rose to his feet and we kept walking. Needless to say that the decisions I made were a lot better, and the hurdles we faced were significantly smaller. We came to a large creek which crossed our path. I stopped to scout out a way to cross it without getting washed away.
