Prologue Oh, hello! Are you back already? Was it today we were going to meet? What with everything that’s happened over the past few days, it completely slipped my mind. I even got to fly outside in daylight, that’s how bad things have been.
Well, it all started when they went out in the Meat Wagon the night before last. The Meat Wagon? It’s the Hatchlings’ big black metal box. It moves and brings food to the cave. But it does smell a bit odd. Like caged fire.
Anyway, the Hatchlings went out in it. Steamy stayed here and let me out for a flap but the others, they took one of the small boxes with them, came back soaked to the skin! You would think that they would have learnt by now that if it’s raining, you take shelter. But no! They have to go out in it! What they use for brains sometimes, I do not know. What’s worse is, come morning, they did the same thing again. But this time they came back smelling like blood. It must be some ritual the Hatchlings have, daubing themselves in blood, because they seem to come back coated in it every other week. Like that time the friend they brought home exploded all over the cave. I was displeased, to say the -
I’m digressing, aren’t I? Sorry, I’ll get on with it. So, later that night (do they ever go home!), they let a new Hatchling into my cave. If they want to bring someone new into our family, then that’s fine with me but I would like to be consulted about it first. I don’t know, children! This one, I’ll be honest, looked a lot like a startled animal. You know, just before you swoop down and eat it. Like a rabbit, that knows what’s about to happen but can’t do a thing to stop it.
She came into the cave carrying two boxes of warm bread with unhappy milk. The Hatchlings must have been planning some kind of surprise for her because Smelly hid up in the High Cave and Saucy, Chef and Inedible all pretended to work. It didn’t last long, though, because Chef and Inedible started squawking and spoilt the surprise! Well, after that, there didn’t seem much point in staying quiet so I flew down to say hello. She really did look like a startled rabbit.
Smelly then took Rabbit down to where the Nastys live. Why they want to keep them, I don’t know, but I let them have their pets - it’s good for them to have a hobby. I still try to avoid the Nastys, mind. I don’t like them. I don’t think Rabbit did either. When Smelly brought her back up, she smelt scared. And I mean truly terrified. Piss yourself, oh-no-it’s-the-purple-ferrets-all-over-again petrified. I felt so sorry for her, poor love. Meeting the Nastys for the first time is never a fun experience. It’s even worse in the dark.
It was getting quite late by this point so, whilst the others went home, Smelly took Rabbit up the pole. I say the others went home but that’s not strictly true. Saucy snuck back down and took the Metal Claw and the Metal Spike. She probably wanted them for supper. And, of course, Steamy seems to hardly ever go back to his own cave. I think he went down to see his Metal Mate. Everything down here is metal! Or stone. Not a tree in sight. I don’t think the other Hatchlings like Metal Mate; they never go and see her. When he came back up, he seemed sad. Poor little one doesn’t like his family not liking her. He headed up to the surface but I don’t think he went home. He never goes home. When Smelly returned, he even made him some steamy stuff. That Hatchling would never cope on his own, not without me and Steamy to look after him.
Speaking of Smelly, he left just after dawn the next morning. He came back before the others arrived, of course, but I do worry what he does that early. I suspect it involves sausages.
Anyway, that evening, when Saucy left, she took more metal stuff with her than usual. Smelly then followed her up on the pole. I don’t know what happened up there exactly, but I do know Saucy in now food in my big fridge. Smelly seems upset about that. I don’t know why. It’s what she would have wanted. I hope Chef prepares her properly; I’d hate to get bones stuck in my throat.
Rabbit came back down with Smelly. I think they want me to adopt her. I will. She seems sweet. But she won’t replace my Saucy.
