Are You Suffering?

So I got to the venue late (my definition of "late" here being 8:30 when the show was set to start at 9. It didn't actually start until 9:30 but still). The line went about halfway around the block, and since the doors opened late I had to brave the cold for about 20 minutes or so. Without a jacket. Fun times. XD"

Once I got inside, I almost went to the pit, but decided it was a bit too crowded and I wouldn't be able to see very well from where I was, so I went up to the seats instead, where even though I was kind of far back I could still see everything clearly. The stage was set up with a big trampoline-looking thing in the center, with a silhouette of a cardboard-cutout rat.

Oh, that reminds me, I saw a rat (or maybe it was a mouse, but some kids who saw it were like "Look! A baby rat!" XD") on the way to class earlier in the day. It was tiiiiny, pretty much a little round fluff ball with ears. Cuuute. <3 I didn't know Emilie was totally into rats though, but now it seems like an interesting coincidence in retrospect.

Actually I should probably mention right now that before this show, I didn't know much about Emilie as a person, or what her live performances were like. I just knew I loved her music, and she was playing at the venue across the street from my dorm, so I had to go.

Anyway, the lights dimmed, the music started but I thought it sounded a bit fuzzy, and I must've been right because then the lights turned back on. XD" But a few minutes later they started the show for reals. And of course this was when I accidentally dropped my phone battery on the ground near my seat and couldn't find it again until near the end of the show. D= Which normally wouldn't be too bad, except I planned to use my cell phone to take photos (my camera's missing right now ;^;), and I'd spent like an hour clearing out other photos so I could use the phone for the concert. @_@ But I did get a few photos at the very end, so that worked out okay.

So before Emilie walks out, there's three other girls with her, who I find out later are the Bloody Crumpets; Captain Maggot, Contessa, and Veronica. They're awesome. That trampoline thing I mentioned earlier? As they walked out, they started out behind it, so the first thing you saw of them were silhouettes. Which looked especially cool when Emilie showed up, and she was wearing this really cool mask that looked sort of peacock-ish (or reminded me of one anyway). You can see photos of it, as well as the setlist, here.

I was kind of hoping they'd play I Know Where You Sleep and Gothic Lolita (my first song by her), but we got Liar and Dead Is The New Alive, so that makes up for it. I recognized most of the songs since most of the setlist was from the Opheliac album. There were a few songs I hadn't heard before, but they were awesome, especially 4 o'Clock and this one song where Veronica played the harpsichord and Emilie had her electric violin (according to the setlist, it was Unlaced).

All the music sounded amazing live. Like, it's good recorded too, but live is just whooooooooooaa. *A* Emilie is super talented. The electric violin sounded super cool, and even reminded me of an electric guitar at times. Which is probably appropriate since at one point she said "Violin is the new guitar". Heck yes it is. <3

The show itself was also fantastic. Emilie isn't just a musician, she's a performance artist. The funny thing is I'd been randomly reading up on burlesque recently, and I could tell Emilie definitely drew some influences from it for her show. Also the costumes were gorgeous. <3

And The Bloody Crumpets are very good acrobats! Contessa did this gorgeous trapeze act where she was hanging from a scarf and twirling around in the air. Veronica also did some neat fan dances with giant feather fans, and Captain Maggot did some cool hula hoop tricks. They probably did other stuff too but those are the main things I remember.

There were also some really hilarious comedy bits between songs. XD And then there's The Rat Game, where they call a volunteer from the audience to get a kiss from Veronica. But it has to be a girl who's never been kissed by another girl (so I totally qualified except I was way in the back, so she probably didn't even see me raise my hand. XD" Oh well, maybe next time). Fun times.

The audience was pretty cool too. At one point this guy shouted out to Emilie "I RESPECT YOU AS A PERSON!". XD And Emilie responded with something like "Well, I don't know what that's like but I guess I'll have to get used to it!". Aww.

Oh yeah, and the people in the front got tea and cookies spit at them throughout the show. XD

So when the show ended, I headed back to my dorm real quick to get some money to buy merch. It took a while because there was a big crowd and only one person running the merch booth (poor girl D=), but in the end I got a poster and the Signature tea blend (black tea with chocolate, almonds, and roses. Sounds awesome =3). They also had a white tea with mint called Basil's Blend, and I would have gotten that too except each tea blend was $20. And they had the Asylum book, which I really want but I didn't know it was $75. D= I probably should have gone for it though since it turns out you can only get it directly from Emilie and they're sold out on the website. ;^; Oh well.

All in all, I had an awesome time! I walked in as a fan, and walked out as a full-fledged Plague Rat. =3

concerts, yay, reports
