I'd been meaning to make a post about this for the last few days or so.
Okay, the controversy surrounding the mosque being built near Ground Zero? It's getting ridiculous.
First of all, we have a little thing here in America called Freedom Of Religion. It's their right to place the mosque there if they choose to do so.
Second, not all Muslims are terrorists (though try telling that to mom's side of the family and
it doesn't go well. >>). The terrorists involved in the 9/11 attacks were radical extremists, not people representing the whole of Islam. Every religion has radical extremists.
Some extremists seem to be more accepted here than others though. >> Apparently when a white Christian man flies a plane into a building it isn't terrorism according to some people. Remember Joe Stack,
the guy in Austin, Texas who did just that? I swear it seemed like every. single. news. report. about it was trying to avoid calling him a terrorist, or in some cases
flat out saying he WASN'T one. D=
And then there's a group of people here in NYC who are
starting a bus ad campaign against the mosque. The bus ads depict scenes from the 9/11 attacks. Many people in the comments noted that they or other New Yorkers are still suffering from PTSD because of the attacks. So wouldn't posting triggering images on buses across the city be considered an act of terrorism? Because that's practically like posting seizure-inducing images where an epileptic can see them.
Anyway, there really shouldn't be so much fuss about this mosque. Hell, I'm willing to bet that if it were a church, not only would there not be any controversy, but people would friggin encourage that. D=
