Avoiding Commissions Like A Boss.

Apr 02, 2011 21:12

So okay, I'll admit it, I've been avoiding doing commissions the last few days. Sometimes I just need a break from them - but it's all good, I'm not really a work-sky lay-about, having some time away from a painting/drawing actually lets me see it with "fresh eyes" which is not as creepy as it sounds. It helps for me to see the mistakes, what needs more depth, blah blah blah. I pretty much spend hours a day looking from the same picture to the same painting and I tend to miss really obvious things, so taking some time away from it, really is useful and totally not an excuse for me to draw things that I want to draw.

That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it.
What I drew instead were pretty guys. I know, right? Shocking!

[bigger version and different drawings under cut.]

I decided not to finish the hair on this. It's not because I'm lazy and I don't like drawing hair, it's because I think it looks nice like this. Got it?

This is done mainly in charcoal, with some graphite powder because I'm an idiot and got the graphite powder mixed up with the charcoal.

Done in colour pencil.
[ETA: I meant to ask, does anyone think I should add a background to this? And if so, any ideas? I was just thinking that maybe his dirty - or my attempt at making him look war-torn and dirty - appearance might be too much of a contrast against the very white background.]
I'd really like to learn how to use colour pencils. I can't find any tutorials [I've been looking for skin/portrait tutorials] online, only ones that show the basic shading techniques. I know the basics, and I know how to layer, I'd just really like to know how to draw portraits in them properly. You know you see some that look like photos? Yeah, that's my goal.
If anyone knows how to use them properly, please let me know! Mainly I have Prismacolors, but I have a few other sets in there too - just in case that matters!

Also relating to this drawing - Has anyone actually seen The Pacific? I tried but it was just too much for me. Anything to do with the war is just a bit too over-whelming for me. I know if I watch this whole series I will end up in some weird funk for a while, and I don't really want to be sad, no matter how good this looks.

And a WIP.
Fine. I'll admit it, I can't stop thinking about the damn programme. Don't judge me.
[FYI this is also Rami Malek in The Pacific]
But yeah, this is how I start everything - with a very faint sketch, and then I just start adding layers of shading.

And for the record, I still am totally baffled by Tumblr.

supernatural, art, rami malek, some days i just like tagging okay?, the pacific, jared padalecki, sam winchester
