Ok now that I'm caught up with the review posts... "And I love that there's such an incredible meaning to the soul gem, because so many mahou shoujo series have talismans like this, but how many of them give such incredible meaning to them?" Super agreed. That everything in this series is given a real hard look is really great, like I how I enjoy that Kyubey is just this thing who wants to make more Magical Girls and is emotionally distant from them all despite being a standard cute looking mascot.
As for the soul gem, it possibly went crunch because it was on Mami's hairpiece. I wonder how breakable they are?
If Madoka resists ever being turned into a Magical Girl that will be the biggest trolling ever.
Oh, man, I started watching this show after everyone was like, "....HOLY SHIT, EPISODE 3, DID NOT SEE THAT COMING." and I got curious. I love how they're very clearly aware of all of these tropes and paying homage to them by giving them these darker meanings or going in the completely opposite direction. And Kyuubei is so cute and has an adorable little voice and then just... NOTHING, no empathy or care or anything. Except more and more pressure.
....you know, part of me wouldn't be surprised if Urobuchi Gen is trolling us all and actually wouldn't ever make Madoka a magical girl. Though, I suspect it'll be more like we'll see it happen in the final episode and, like, she'll be the only one left or something.
AND I WOULD LIKE THE NEXT EPISODE NOW, PLZ. AND THE MANGA. +__+
I accidentally got spoilered on Episode 3 after ep 6 aired and went I MUST SEE THIS. It's really exciting to see a series take a well-known concept and do something unexpected with it and to take it seriously. And after reading up a little on the Faust symbolism I'm like... why didn't anyone come up with this concept before? Cute animal offering you things for your soul? It fits so well.
What's some of your favorite theories at the moment? Mine is "Sakaya = the Witch from the first ep dream sequence" because after her minor freakout in the alleyway in ep 6 (about how Mami was special and she would fight against people like Kyouko and Homura) I could really see it.
You know, I haven't read up much on Faustian symbols, but it's a long wait until episode 7, so I think I might just do that. (Assuming I can tear myself away from Pixiv... it's tempting to get another tumblr just for spamming Madoka Magica art. orz) And now that you mention it, why hasn't there been more Twisted Magical Girl anime before? Surely, there must be at least a manga on it!
My guess is that Kyouko and Sayaka are either just going to be elsewhere or not making it into the pocket dimension to fight... or else they're dead somewhere. I like the pet theory that Homura is from the near future sent back into time, so she knows how all this is going to explode in their faces.
I'm also keeping an eye on their third friend, the girl with the green hair, because I keep wondering how witches are made, why they have names, if they weren't human once. Though, I also wonder at taking all that magic into a soul gem and why aren't there older magical girls around and just... how horrible would it be if it was a never-ending cycle?
( ... )
And about those soul gems - it struck me how the grief seeds aren't giving power to the soul gems, they're just sucking out the dark stuff that gets on it after using magic a lot. It's not a powerup at all...! The soul gems don't get weaker, they just get dirtier. :X
The implication seemed to be that you needed them to give you power as well, but that they also cleaned up your soul and, you know. That is a really good point about... if you keep using magic, but don't collect grief seeds... just what happens to you? Neither Sayaka nor Madoka have really asked that question.
And how the grief seeds are suspiciously soul gem-sized. I really hope it's that magical girls turn into witches, though the other possibility is cool too where something else makes witches? An anti-Kyubey (the black cat?) and a "negative wish"? And agreed about their green-haired friend. She matches the magical girl world of coordination, something better happen.

asdf;lkjasl;kj well, now I'm going to be disappointed if they don't have anything to do with the soul gems beyond what we already know. I know it's terrible to hope that they're in danger of becoming witches, but it would be so horrible that it would be kind of awesome.
I'm almost a little wary of getting too hopeful, because I felt this same way about AngelBeats! (well, maybe not quite as intensely) and that was good, but never reached its potential. If Madoka Magica goes there? I think it could be really great.
That black cat makes me wonder, too! I don't think we've seen it in the series proper at all yet, though? And we're at the halfway point, so if it hasn't shown up by now, will it? Because I'm totally ready for it to be Urobuchi just trolling us while he laughs and laughs.
I want to love this series, I hope it doesn't take a nosedive from here on out. 8( That would be too disappointing.
I got wikitrapped on Urobuchi's stuff last night, specifically Saya no Uta. I don't know about his other stories, but that one did not pull any punches. :o
I heard about them not panning away from Mami's death, too! But nobody's doing English scanslations yet as far as I can tell? Which surprises me, because it's a really popular anime!
And I know there are going to be three different series, but I think only one of them focuses on the anime's characters? The others are about other characters in the same world, IIRC. (Which tells me that the mythology/background world must be at least somewhat important.)

I do keep wondering what the black cat will have to do with the series, since it's so classically a witch's familiar.
