ISN'T IT AMAZING? God, I love how much Japan loves One Piece. WHICH REALLY DESERVES ALL THE LOVE, SCREW ANYONE WHO HATES THE RECENT DIRECTIONS THINGS HAVE GONE IN. >:|b
The thing about One Piece is that it works on a large scale narrative level in ways that Naruto and Bleach do not. So when Odacchi is setting up his next arc, things seem to slow down or meander for a bit when in reality, he's just laying down the foundation for future awesome.
As hard as it was to read at times, The Whitebeard War saga has been masterfully planned. I've gone back to reread different parts of the Baroque Works saga and it's amazing how many little details were clearly put in place because Odacchi planned everything out. I think that's a lot of what makes this saga's events okay for me. When you have a master planner of that level, it's hard not to appreciate everything, even the painful stuff.
I had a conversation on DW once about OP and how reading it differed quite a bit from reading Naruto and Bleach in the sense that you mainline Naruto and Bleach because doing so helps masks the flaws with decompressed time (KT) and narrative flailing (Kishimoto) whereas with OP, mainlining it really highlights and concentrates the awesome. I mainlined OP (570+ chapters) in about a month, maybe less, so I was really struck about how often Odacchi does do those callbacks and narrative echoes to previous happenings in the manga.
That's a very good point about Bleach and Naruto versus One Piece. I have, of course, often noticed that OP is a series that is packed full of detail in every chapter, Odacchi does not waste space with the manga. There's always a lot of text, but there's also a lot of detail going on in the background or there's an epic two-page spread that really delivers a huge impact. It's an incredible mix of art, pacing, writing, and attention to detail that I haven't seen anywhere else, not on a weekly basis like this
