re: UtaOni - I don't think I can ever bring myself to like Sousuke and Haruki, partly because they don't get any real characterization and partly because this is just not enough to make up for their part of the totally uncool way Kenta was tossed from the band, but I really couldn't hate them. They felt like they were... lemmings, just following whoever was leader of the pack. And they kind of realized that they were in over their heads, which is why I think they went to Kenta, because they knew they weren't strong enough to hold this thing together.

I still hate that apology from Kenta, but it's not their fault. And I do love that Kenta basically gives them the same tough love advice that he got and I love how it showed how much Kenta had matured. And, ultimately, I don't care about those two, but I do care about Kenta, so if that conversation put him in a better place, well, I'm okay with it then, too.

Now, I haven't watched episode 08 yet and I assume Kenta will give Akane the same tough love advice, but I'm also sort of wary because... I guess part of the problem is that I've been watching Mei-chan no Shitsuji at the same time, where people have these flaws and they've all been getting called on their shit. For the right reasons! Not just becoming better people (though, that, too) but getting called on the shit that they needed to be called on! I feel like Akane will become a better person, but she won't get called on being a hypocrite and I'm not sure I can ever be 100% okay with her (neutral, sure. okay with, no.) without it. Especially after the way she haunted Kenta's life.

Oh, man, I cannot express how delighted I am that most of the flist seems to have the same feelings on Anzai, that he's kind of great because he owns what a total dick he is and makes no bones about it, doesn't apologize for it, but he's not out to hurt people because that's how he gets his kicks. It just doesn't really bother him that much, because that's not what he's here for. He's here to make money and he's good at his job. And also PERSONALITY, HE HAS IT.

Favorite part, hands down, was Katsumi's 'please marry me!' and Kenta saying 'nope, can't do it'. Oh, Kacchan, how I love you. ♥

asd;flkjas;lkdjasljk I meant to mention that and HOW MUCH I LOVED IT because that whole thing was so great. Kenta's FACES when Kacchan was trying to practice his proposals! YOU KNOW HE'D BE THE GREATEST BROTHER IN LAW EVER, KENTA! I really hope that Sakura comes around by the final episode, because they'd be so darling together. ♥

As for Sho... I'm okay with the randomness of it, because the show has been one giant meta joke/reference after another, so it fits with the rest of it. My real problem is the way it was hyped so much and then it was just this super-short cameo and I wish it had been more than what we'd already seen in the promotion for it. Though, I got the impression that Sho was just in the building for some reason or other, but I would have liked... I dunno, a scene of Sho actually on Minna de Utao! It'd have been GREAT! And wouldn't have added much time to his cameo!

Still. Ohno's FACE during the whole thing! I WAS DYING JUST AS HARD AS SHO CLEARLY WANTED TO.

re: Mei-chan - I really came to love the butlers' understanding of each other, the way you really got the sense of how there was this whole sub-culture that connected them, for lack of a better way to put it. Like, they're not just extensions of their ladies, there's also comraderie between the butlers themselves, they understood what Rihito was going through and the show didn't have to say a word to let you know that. And I'm really kind of impressed at how much personality they managed to give the butlers, rather than just letting their quirks or single characteristic solely define them. Not that they were particularly deep or anything, but I felt like they weren't just cardboard cutouts moving around whenever it was convenient for the plot. (Even if they kind of were, they didn't feel like that to me most of the time. XD)

Aside from the main cast, Kiba is totally my favorite butler. I cannot fathom the person who would not want to take him home and cuddle with him for hours and feed him cookies. Cannot fathom it.

As for Kento, you make a really compelling arguement for where he's coming from and I feel like you could be on to something there. I would have to rewatch it again, but it feels like you have all the right pieces here--Kento's insightfulness and kindness in his own huffy way towards others, the way he relates to his older brother, the way he clearly saw Mei loved Rihito, the way it would fit with the drama having done such a delightful job with everything else.

Because I felt like that's where they were going with episode 08, after Kento woke the two of them up, that he put himself in that role, in the role of fighting for Mei's affection, because he knew that Rihito wouldn't wake up without it. I want to believe that he would carry on with that through the finale, because... I was actually kind of surprised at how much of Kento's scenes in the finale weren't about Mei so much as they were about his relationship with Rihito. And I could believe that Kento says that he's not going to give up on Mei because he knows it'll keep Rihito on his toes, knows that it'll keep Rihito from slipping back into old habits and pulling away from Mei back into robot-ville. He knows that it'll make Rihito jealous and that Rihito'll show that side of himself to Mei.

I want to believe that he said his feelings for her wouldn't change, but hers might, because he thinks it's the best way to deal with everyone, that he's just sort of letting her know that he's not going to leave her behind forever, that he'll still be around, even if she loves his brother (whom she knows Kento has issues with) and that him saying his feelings for her wouldn't change were really, "My presence in your life won't change." Because I think Mei was really worried about that, he's an important friend to her, even if she doesn't love him the way she loves his brother.

And, seriously, the way Mei is watching Rihito watching Kento leave kind of really made me pause thoughtfully.

re: Voice - I'm sure part of my reaction is that I'm sad for Ryousuke and his father's relationship, which seemed to finally be making some progress. And then this wrench gets thrown into things and Ryousuke goes right back to not trusting him and not talking to him directly, going behind him again. It's one thing to go behind his back and look for answers. It's another to drag the widow into it and get a ball rolling that can't be undone once it starts.

The more I think about it, though, the more I'm looking at it as Ryousuke being a flawed character, too, and that makes me even more interested in him. And that it wouldn't be Voice if I weren't sort of torn on how to feel about things. And that I'm going to reserve judgement as much as I can. XD

I do like that they had to confront the idea that their job, what they do, does not magically make things better for people.

The case itself, simply on its own, might have been a little borderline for me without this message. But the more I think about it, the more I like it, because it's something they had to face eventually and Voice has been terrific about getting these characters to actually grow over the course of the series. This is something they had to face, that sometimes they can't make people's lives easier with their results. But I'm also glad that there was at least something good out of that whole tragic mess, that the son would get something out of it, even if his life would be difficult from then on. I'm glad they didn't have to face their first time giving someone unhappy news being a total wash.

The umbrella-holding scene! I loved it. I loved it because Daiki is just as fluttery and nervous around her as she is around him sometimes! I LOVE IT when the boy is just as stupid for the girl as she is for him. I love it because it makes them a cuter couple and I love it because it gives Daiki a great human quality all over again.

I WILL NEVER GET TIRED OF HANEI AND HIS, "JESUS, MOM!" REACTIONS. NEVER EVER. I love that she's never really bothered by her son's reactions, you can tell what a great mom she is by how she likes to mess with those kids out of LOVE. I would seriously watch an entire scene of just her and Daiki pretty much FOREVER.

re: Smile - OH MAN I HADN'T EVEN THOUGHT OF HIDENORI'S BLOG PHOTOS. DO WANT. DO WANT. Even if I'm not sure he'd be allowed to put up photos of Jun. Still! And I am going to cryface forever that Shukudai-kun is on NTV and Smile is going to be on TBS and I think TBS' only Arashi show is Himitsu no Arashi-chan. Maybe we'll get to see him there? Though, seriously, NTV NEEDS MORE ARASHI DRAMAS SO WE CAN GET SOME PROMOTION GOING HERE.

....goddammit, now I'm checking for Shun's NTV dramas and he had Binbo Dashi last year, why was he not on Shukudai-kun? *stomps foot*
