Just got this e-mail in response to the comment I sent the other night:

We understand that several areas other than New Orleans have also been affected by Hurricane Katrina, and we apologize for any frustration you've experienced with Google Maps (beta). Please be assured that we are working closely with our data providers to offer updated imagery, and we hope to expand this coverage in the future.
