refuges

I love Lindy Hop because its an exuberant, bouncy dance, to some of the most boldly joyful music in American history.  I love the dizziness of it, and the mandatory eye contact, and the formal structure.  I love the hoakey wholesomeness of Lindy in the Park on Sunday afternoons, with the free dance lesson, and having dance parthers of all ages and races, from the 70 year old Chinese gentleman who speaks not a word of English to the tattooed 20 year old hipster, and everyone else.  I love being able to interact with so many people and not having to worry about being tongue tied, and not having to figure out what to say.  Its almost impossible to stop smiling while being spun around to Benny Goodman's Sing Sing Sing on a sunny Sunday afternoon.  By far, this is my favorite way to connect with strangers.  Also, its great to do this with Andy.

I'm kind of a klutz, but I'm ... not a bad dancer.

Its nice to be social without having to actually talk to people.  Lately, I crave constant motion.  Conversation?  Hard right now.  My thoughts are kind of a mess.  I'm more than a little bit stressed these days.

But I've been running again, which is helping.  I'm out of shape, in that way; I can do about a mile and a half before I need a walk break, and that's on a flat surface, of which tehre aren't many around here other than Kezar and the gym.  Part of it is focus; running takes a kind of steadiness I'm out of practice with. The endorphin rush feels good, working to a sweat is a kind of haven, and sometimes my head turns off.

The Academy of Sciences is my favorite place to sit and stare into space these days. I recommend downtempo on the ipod, while watching the fishes flit about.

I'm goign to watch a movie while the rest of the world gets schnockered tonight.  Anyone care to join me?
