Fic: Neville Makes a Friend (gen, Neville-centric, G)

Sep 23, 2006 12:24

So, clare_dragonfly asked for a drabble about Neville. And as always when I try to write drabbles about Neville, this one went over its intended word count...

Title: Neville Makes a Friend
Rating: G (warning for a cute small child in a garden)
Summary: An alternate origin story for Trevor the Toad. Neville saves a life and is rewarded.
Word Count: ~900

Once upon a time there was a little boy called Neville Longbottom... )

neville, g, hp fic, gen

Thanks! It's hard to write Neville as a small child and not be awfully cute. :)

So he just patted the top of his head and asked, “Do you think you’d like to be called Trevor?”

“Grrbbt,” replied Trevor. And that was that.

*loves* What an adorable fic!

Awww, I love your Neville so much. I find it really hard to get worked up about post-OotP canon!Neville, even though I know I'm supposed to (same with Luna and Tonks), but I love him in fanon.

Also, this bit (And so as to avoid a repetition of The Incident With The Butterscotch Pudding) reminds me of the way Bill Watterson always alludes to "the Noodle Incident" in Calvin & Hobbes, but we never find out what it is. Hee!

I think Neville was totally shortchanged in HBP, and I hope he's off doing all sorts of cool things Harry doesn't know about (that therefore don't get into canon). He's always had the potential to be a great character, and if JKR doesn't use it, fandom will. (I never warmed up to Luna either, and Tonks after HBP, well...)

I really like "Incidents" with no known story behind them. They make the world more interesting. :)
