Hey, VS, thought I'd help out your friend since you're trucking it right now.
It depends on your age. If you're under 18, maybe aupairing would be the way to go. Make some money, free housing...but it does have its downfalls. Especially if you don't know the family before hand (I do have horror stories). If you have waitressing experience, try that. Bartending can bring in a lot of money. Or you can temp and gain office experience while getting 13-15 per hour. Not bad. And if you share an apartment with someone in Queens or Brooklyn, it's doable. Your share can be anywhere from 700-850 (with utilities). No car needed (which is a huge plus). Just a $76 dollar monthly metrocard for the subways and the bus. Some neighborhoods to look out for: Astoria and Williamsburg.
Or, think of it this way. Give the aupairing thing a shot. When you get there, if it doesn't work out, start looking for a roommate on Craigslist, get a job, and get out of there. Just save up at least 4,000 beforehand as a backup. For first month and security. New York is more affordable than people give it credit for.
I'm done. Hope you don't mind, VS. It's a long day at work. ;)
