While I'm thinking about it...

Yes, I did make it back from
con_txt in one piece. I ended up not taking I-95 south from DC, which even though the route I took was longer (mostly due to small towns and stoplights, as it's actually a more direct route aside from getting around the DC beltway), it was easier on my peace of mind and a gorgeous, easy trip once I got out of the DC suburbs. However,
mrshamill, you were right; I should have just gone ahead and taken today as a vacation day. While I felt OK last night, I woke up this morning feeling like warmed-over crap and as a result am working from home today. And I don't even think it's con crud, just general ickiness. But there was just no way I could either a) face the commute this morning, or b) face the fluorescent lighting at the office. My head hurts. And no, it's not a hangover. :-) This way, though, I do get to watch the first round Wimbledon match in which Roger Federer is having to fight rather more than he thought he would, I suspect.

I had a fantastic time at the con, and among others got to meet
thalia,
wyomingnot and latxcvi in person, although it was all too brief with LaT, as we spent most of the weekend text messaging each other and trying to figure out where each other was. I'm really pretty sure we passed each other a half dozen times and never knew. :-) I volunteered 3 hours, was supposed to volunteer for 4, but I ran into the only problem I had the whole con on Sunday morning.

I took my stuff down to my car first thing before breakfast, as I didn't anticipate having time to go back to my room on Sunday. When I got down there, I tried to use my remote to open my trunk and unlock my car, and it didn't work. Yup, you guessed it, my battery died. My car has these really convenient to turn on overhead lights, which has occasionally meant that when I'm not careful I can accidentally turn one on as I leave the car and not know it. It's caused me problems before. So I did that on Thursday, and then didn't go back to my car for three days. Whoops. Note to self: when le brain is suggesting you go down and check on your car? Do that. *sigh* Anyway, I have AAA and they came relatively quickly, but it did mean I had to default on my final hour of volunteering. I did do a little of it while waiting for them, but left halfway through. And then I had to go back up while he was charging my car, because I forgot my iPod case with the iPod and various important cards such as my driver's license in it on the ConSweet table. *facepalm* The rest of the day I was constantly losing things and having to scramble for them. While briefly back in the ConSweet, LaT and I finally ran into each other and she walked me back down to the garage and stayed with me until my car was charged. (I look forward to getting together in the future!) Then I did the usual drive around to charge up deal (ended up driving through Sligo Creek Park, which is truly lovely), and came back only 10 minutes late for the panel I wanted to attend that morning.

Thursday
Made it in good time on Thursday afternoon until I hit the Beltway, which added another hour onto my travel time. My GPS told me there was a 45-minute traffic jam, so I pressed "avoid", and it decided the best thing was to take me straight through downtown DC. Yeah, no. I decided to just deal with the traffic.
thalia and I had a lovely dinner Thursday evening, and talked about all kinds of fannish stuff. We shall have to do that again sometime.

I am not going to attempt to describe all that was discussed during the panels, as I'm terrible at remembering stuff like that and taking notes would have been too much like work. ;-) However, I do want to note what I attended and a bit of what they were about.

Friday
  • Adam Lambert - basically a squee panel about the awesomeness of Adam Lambert. This was a great panel to start off with as it was really just so much fun.
  • Supernatural - My interest in the show has never quite hit the level that it has for others, but I do still enjoy it, and it was a very interesting panel. We discussed some of the lingering issues from the past season and the finale. Quite enjoyable.
  • Trek & Beyond - Here we discussed all the many, many, many other Trek resources beyond the TV show and movies, such as the animated series, the novels, the comics, and what I will refer to as the technical manuals, although that's not entirely accurate. Basically, all the "non-fiction" of the Trek universe, including encyclopedias, chronologies and what have you. Awesome panel, especially since as much of a Trek novel fan I have been in the past, there is sooooo much I have missed.
  • Star Wars - We had a do-it-yourself Star Wars pizza party, which was a lot of fun and included -
melannen, I think? - suggesting that the Prequels make much more sense if you assume that Yoda and Padme are together. Which... I can't even explain that; you kinda had to be there. :-D

Saturday
  • Sinister Ducks - Yes. Well, first the thing you need to know is that the duck is the
con_txt mascot. Secondly, apparently there's a massive, evil duck-kind conspiracy to take over the universe. ;-) Also occasionally including geese and swans. Very fun, very silly. Also including some horrifying, scarring, childhood-destroying YouTube vids. *snerk*
  • Eleventh Doctor - Then came the Doctor Who panel. It was meant to focus on Eleven, but it was more wide-ranging than that, because of course in considering Eleven one has to consider all that came before him. Very good panel aside from a few frustrating moments where people were complaining about Ten and Rose in Series Two, but... *shrug* People have different opinions, of course.
  • SGA - This was intended to be an "is SGA dead" panel, but I think we determined that it's still very well-represented and there are still lots of stories posted, it's just that it's no longer the fandom that ate all other fandoms anymore, and thus is far less obvious than it was. Very fun panel.
  • Leverage - Much talk about why we love Leverage, what pairings we liked (the consensus was on Alec/Parker/Eliot), and talk about what we thought would happen in the new season (which started last night!). Loads of fun.
  • White Collar - Again, much talk about why we love the show, about the favored pairing (tripling?) of Neal/Peter/Elizabeth, and what's coming up in the next season.

A bunch of us went off to dinner after this, and then we had the vid show, which was awesome as per usual. I might post more about the vid show later on, but I have to give props to
wyomingnot, whose vid The Way We Get By (a Leverage Alec/Parker/Eliot vid) got an excellent response. Which only makes sense, because it's awesome.

Someone had asked early on Friday about a room party to watch this weekend's Doctor Who (the new UK episode), but there was so much response that we actually got moved into two of the panel rooms after the vid show. So I got to watch the episode Saturday night in a room with a bunch of other fangirls/fanboys and projected on a big screen. It was AWESOME. Probably more on that later.

Sunday
On Sunday, I had the aforementioned car trouble, so I was ten minutes late for the first panel, which was:
  • Star Trek, Boldly Slashing - More specifically on pairings and characters and the TV shows and movies than the other panel. Big focus on TOS and the recent movie, but some talk on the other Trek shows also. Oh, that one fic that was mentioned that I found the name of? It was Graduate Vulcan for Fun and Profit by lazuilisong. It's all about Kirk being smart and has an awesome Vulcan OC.
  • BBC - Basically, this was all about British TV shows which aren't Doctor Who or Merlin. Very interesting, even if I frequently didn't have a clue what people were talking about. I might have to look up some of that, though.
  • M/M/F Threesomes - This was all about M/M/F threesomes and how they seem to be getting more popular lately. Lots of discussion about why these work and why they're getting more popular.
  • They Fight Crime! - Last panel. Basically this was all about shows like Leverage, White Collar, Burn Notice, and a number of others, and what the difference is between those shows and the Law & Order-type procedural. Although there was a lot of going off on tangents toward the end of that panel; I think we were all getting a bit punchy by that point. :-)

Then I drove home, and collapsed on the sofa to watch Leverage last night, which was great. Possibly more on that later.

Hmmm, that ended up longer than I thought it would.
