I am glad that Moffat and others put out warnings to watch this unspoiled, because while I am not usually fussed about spoilers, this is one of those instances where unspoiled is definitely better. I was hoping that Neil would pull this off, because he wrote my favorite episode of Season 5 of Babylon 5, except for the last one, and that was written and made earlier than S5 (short version of the story for non-B5 fans: they didn't think they would get a fifth season, so they went ahead and did the finale so it could go at the end of season four if it had to). As I just wrote a bit earlier in
karenor's journal, you could really tell just how much Neal loves Doctor Who in ALL of its iterations. Unlike the writer for last week's pirate episode, which felt like he'd never seen a Doctor Who episode IN HIS LIFE and just threw a mish-mash together because he thought it was cool. (Found out after he's also the guy who did the WORST episode of Sherlock BBC, "The Blind Banker". Ugh. I can only assume Moffat keeps hiring him because he's a buddy; I believe he's also doing an upcoming episode of Sherlock.) But on to more enjoyable things!
First off, I really really loved that although they titled the episode "The Doctor's Wife", that was never actually referenced in the episode. We were all just meant to infer it. Once she pulled herself together, they really did feel - and work together - as if they were in fact a couple who'd been married a really long time (wow, seven centuries is a long marriage; probably just as well they can't argue on a regular basis).
Second, the actress that they found to play the TARDIS, Suranne Jones, really pulled it off. She was amazing, from her first confused (and crazed) moments to when she figured who she was and who the Doctor was, to the end. LOVED her. Would like to keep her around as the voice of the TARDIS or something, but that would probably get old after awhile.
Third, we got to see more of the TARDIS! Pity it had to be while the TARDIS had been made into a horrific kind of funhouse maze. Would like to have an actual tour of the library, wardrobe, swimming pool, etc. (Also, poor Amy and Rory with bunk beds! Hah!)
ETA: Do you know what I forgot? The part where the Doctor locked Amy and Rory in the TARDIS. And I thought to myself, "Gee, this seems familiar." Oh, Doctor, never change. Much.
But the highlight of this episode was the relationship between the Doctor and the TARDIS. It was truly beautiful. I loved that she chose him as much as he chose her. That's awesome. This is one of those episodes where, really? If you think about it too hard, the plot makes little to no sense, but IT DOESN'T MATTER, because the character stuff is JUST THAT AWESOME. Such a good episode. THANK YOU NEIL GAIMAN!!!!!!
