The funny thing
about this not-so-funny thing
is that it was easier to leave you
than lose you;
it hurts more to hate you
than love you
And that she couldn't have stolen something
I quite simply never had
The funny thing
about this not-so-funny thing
is that no matter how pathetic
I know you really are
I would still kiss you,
touch you,
love you if you'd let me
I'd still let you hurt me
I'd even bend a little
to make it easier to break me
The funny thing
about this not-so-funny thing
is one day
when the shades are drawn to the windowsill
and the mattress lies in seductive wait,
you'll lay her down on stained sheets
and soiled dreams
And as her breath comes
in hot soft bursts against your lashes
you will close your eyes in rapture
and see her fucking your best friend
Same mattress - same sheets
The funny thing
about this not-so-funny thing
is that as you sit alone
with reality at your head
and your failures gathered at your feet
you'll realize just how big your collection of collapses
has become
You'll realize the only thing you're really good for
is turning moments in to needles,
turning faith in to contempt,
and turning your back on the only person
that could tolerate your inhumanity
You'll scream
long and loud
and I'll finally laugh at the funny
in this not-so-funny thing
poetry,
free verse,
poems
