baby mine

I think my niece is a genius, I spent most of the afternoon with her. she's three and a half months old, and some of the best company I can imagine. I sing to her (johnny cash, bowie, cat stevens, tori amos, camp songs) and she just smiles and loves it...she's a big fan of "ring of fire." also, I sang her "here I go" by whitesnake, and she loved it. grabbed her little hands and made her ddance, and she just grinned and grinned. also "dancing machine," she loves that. the thing is, I'm pretty sure she's on the verge of crawling and talking...and maybe "on the verge" means she'll do it in eight months, and maybe that's just normal and not genius territory, but god...it's amazing to watch. I think that making a baby laugh might be the most validating thing possible...in that moment, when thee baby is smiling in your face and laughing her gorgeous melodic laugh, there is no question that you are important, no question that you have a purpose on this earth. and when she goes to sleep on your chest...bliss. I was made to be an auntie.

I leave for korea on friday at 12:30 in the afternoon. the next time I post, it may be from another continent!
