Two-year-old Christopher Madden is fighting for his life days after being engulfed in flames by a burning gas can at his rural Valparaiso home.
Christopher is being monitored around the clock on the burn unit at Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis after suffering third-degree burns on 75 to 85 percent of his body as a result of the Wednesday accident, his mother said.
You go from hysterical to angry, Lynn Madden, 42, said Saturday from Indianapolis. The emotions go everywhere.
You shut down. You dont want to eat, you dont want to sleep.
Christopher was engulfed by flames Wednesday evening when his 16-year-old brother Ricky accidentally hit him with a burning gas can that had ignited in the familys garage at their home in the 500 block of Glenwood Drive in Center Township.
Lynn Madden said Ricky reacted instinctively when the gas can ignited near his 15-year-old brother Danny. Danny told police the gas can and spilled gasoline on the garage floor ignited when he started a mo-ped he and Ricky had been working on that evening.
Ricky thought Christopher was inside watching cartoons at the time, Lynn Madden said, and tossed the burning can out of the garage without knowing Christopher was standing in the way.
(Ricky and Danny) were quite hysterical that night, Lynn Madden said. This happened so fast. Someone brought them to Porter (hospital), and Ricky kept bawling and sobbing.
Lynn Madden said Christopher nearly died four different times since being admitted at Rileys, including earlier Saturday when a nurse spent more than an hour using a manual ventilator bag on Christopher after his body rejected the machine ventilator.
Hes not good, Lynn Madden said. Hes at the very edge.
The mother said a team of burn experts have been monitoring her son day and night, with nearly a dozen nurses working to make Christopher as comfortable as possible.
The boy has remained unconscious since being airlifted from Porter hospitals Valparaiso campus to Indianapolis late Wednesday.
He has undergone two surgeries already, and another one has been rescheduled multiple times because doctors have been hesitant to move him, Lynn Madden said.
Theyve already made as many incisions on his body as they can to relieve the pressure, Lynn Madden said. There are just so many different types of fluids going into him. Ive never seen anything like it.
Lynn Madden works at Mittal Steel in East Chicago. Christopher is the youngest of five children in the family.
Hes a sweetheart, very playful and highly intelligent, Lynn Madden said. He would play with you and get along with you no matter who you were. If you wanted to play, eat some ice cream or watch cartoons, he would be right there with you.
The family is planning a fund-raiser to help offset the costs of the medical bills. Details are forthcoming.
To everyone who has been keeping Christopher in their prayers, Lynn Madden said, we want them to know how grateful we are.
