Today... overslept, woke with headache. Made breakfast burritos. mmm. Did some work. Showed up at Sequoia at 2:30 to be told that I was late. Was confused, as prof said "I will be in at 1, but I don't care what time you come in." Did more work. Went to the weekly stats department tea party, where Susan's
husband encouraged me to eat cookies and Susan introduced me to some strange woman who works for the American Math blah blah blah, which, interestingly enough, is funded by the NSF and FRY'S. Yeah, the electronic store. But whatever.
Sidenote: later in the day, Eric the grad student informed me that Perci, prof's husband, actually ran away from home at 15 to join the circus. He then became a magician specializing in card tricks. Ladies and gentlemen, our most famous statistician.
The talk was by
Rob Pike, about some new language he's written for google. Better than last talk. Actually, last time, the statisticians attacked each other viciously, and this time there was only one harsh admonishment by Perci. I wonder if they can exist normally. Is it only in the south that people pretend everything is gravy all the time?
After the talk, Perci told me to make more cookies (which is ridiculous, after the enormous number of tiny cookies I left at their house after the crazy party on Sunday (I left at the sign from god: a huge tree spontaneously collapsing, tearing down the power lines). When I was walking home, I came across two very lost Asian girls over in the engineering part where the metal grate bridge is and all the stairs trying to bike. They looked dismayed, having to haul their bikes up. Finally, I turned around and asked them if they needed help. In broken English, they asked where the gymnasium is. I ascertained they needed to be at Roble Gym, which I conveniently walked them to.
"So... are you in the VIA program?"
*giggles and smiles* "Yes!!"
"Oh.. cool... where are you from?"
"Japanes-- Japan!"
"Awesome."
"Thank you!!"
"Do you know Ivan?"
"Kim?"
"No, Ivan, he's a counselor..."
*very broken* "Oh Ivan! Yes. He is kind."
wow.
Kim and I had Chinese chicken salad for dinner, and I had a hotdog manapua from 99 Ranch. I also baked some of the leftover cookie dough (note: triple batch is a bit much). I then sat on the couch trying to do R work. Boo. It got dark. I discovered our theory for eliminating the unsavory artifact on the edge of each MA plot was totally wrong, and it actually made two more artifacts. So that was bad. Then, I tried to use the identify function to see which genes where being spanked, and R froze for 4 hours. Damn. In the mean time....
Adar came over for his blanket and Mexican jumping beans. I made him a nice sandwich. With grapes and orange juice.
I actually cleaned. Whoa.
Chris and Ryan came over. I made them tacos. Then, we walked to the
Papua New Guinea sculpture garden so they could smoke cigars. What is it with boys and "cigars and scotch"? Then we walked back and sat around Lyman. I baked the rest of the cookie dough, and we watched the totally awesome Family Guy episode (Season 4, Ep 5) because those weirdoes hadn't seen it. Then they left. Before we watched Family Guy, R finally stopped and admitted defeat! I didn't have to kill it and start over!! It was awesome. Yeah.
I am soooo not tired. Damn. But I'm not going to touch R. I'm bad.
