Pirates and Quizzes
I did a fresh viewing of Pirates of the Caribbean the other day...
Well, let me say first how very long and deep my obsession with "All Things Piratical" is. I don't know if Errol Flynn's Brian Hawke (Against All Flags) and-or Tyrone Power's Jamie-Boy (The Black Swan) should've been on my early crushes list here. The memory is too hazy. I do know I had Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island, the book and more than one film version, fully memorized before my 8th grade English class ever opened the book. I was pleased when my teacher revealed her choice to show us the 1934 Treasure Island with Wallace Beery, rather the 1950 Treasure Island with Robert Newton.
My favorite pirate movies have long been...
1) Against All Flags (1952, Errol Flynn and Maureen O'Hara.)
2) The Black Swan (1942, Tyron Power and Maureen O'Hara.)
3) Captain Blood (1935, Errol Flynn and Olivia de Havilland.)
4) The Spanish Main (1945, Paul Henreid and Maureen O'Hara.)
5) The Sea Hawk (1940, Errol Flynn and Brenda Marshall.)
I like Pirates of the Caribbean, more than enough to be happy knowing the sequel started filming February 28th, but some things I like better than others and here are my quick thoughts on them...
Most Favorite
Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow - Makes me think of Errol Flynn and Tyrone Power in a good way.
Kiera Knightly as Elizabeth Swann - Makes me think of Maureen O'Hara. That is a good thing.
Anna Maria - She fairs better than Anne Bonney in The Spanish Main.
Least Favorite
William Turner - Makes me think of Westley (The Princess Bride) and Frederick (The Pirate Movie) in a bad way.
Commodore Norrington - Doesn't make me think of anyone. That is a bad thing.
Barbossa - He is a perfectly fine villain. I was very glad to see him get his.
For those not the least bit interested in my pirate obsessing I've got quizzes with nary a pirate in sight. Everett might want to check out the first one. *vbeg*
